Everything Everything

Author: Nicola Yoon

Genre: YA/ Sick Kids

Grade: A

Madeline has lived her whole life inside a bubble of her house, her mother, her books and her nurse. She is allergic to everything in the world. In the beginning this life is working for her. It’s all she knows. She’s a nice, sharp kid whose definitely gotten the raw end of the deal. Then Olly moves in next door. Olly is the typical handsome boy who comes from a troubled home that Madeline immediately has a crush on.

All of the sudden she’s missing all the things she never had before like a real life and the freedom to go outside.

Overall I really enjoyed this book. I liked the back and forth between Olly and Madeline who talk quite a bit in IM’s. The book also has cute little pictures throughout to illustrate Madeline’s mood and thoughts and I’m enjoying that kind of thing right now. I also liked Madeline’s relationship with her nurse, Carla. That felt like a very real friendship with mistakes and dumb ideas but good meaning on both sides.

This book also had the added benefit of fulfilling the “Set in California” square for the Great Imaginations game.

The one issue that might give me pause is the ending. While I enjoyed it and was really surprised by the way it went I can see how some people might find it a bit of a cop out.

Recommend: Yes. This was really good book and I’m hoping Nicola Yoon publishes more soon.
