Shooting Yourself in the Head For Fun & Profit: A Writer’s Survival Guide

Author: Lucy A. Snyder

Genre: Essays/Advice

Grade: B+

I love to read books about the writing process on the off chance that maybe someday I’m going to finish writing something of my own by osmosis or something. I also needed a book that fulfilled the “Bram Stoker Award Winner” for the Great Imaginations Story Sprites game. One that didn’t scare the crap out of me because I just wasn’t in the mood to be frightened.

Nailed it!

Some of these essays are of the “been- there -heard- that- before” variety but Snyder does actually include some good marketing information, some information about how the library system works that I had never heard before and a little behind the scenes of writing conventions that I found quite enjoyable.

The essays are quick and she’s got a friendly easy-going voice that makes it a fun read. As a bonus she includes interviews she’s done with other authors that aren’t exactly in-depth but do talk a little about their process.

I don’t know how much it actually helped me (I’ll let you know if I ever finish anything) but it was a good insightful read.

Recommend: Yes. If you are interested in the writer’s prospective and a little behind the scenes of the business.
