Ghostbusters

Directed: Paul Feig

Starring: Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones, Kate McKinnon and Kristen Wiig

Grade: B

I admit when the trailers for this Ghostbusters redo came out a couple of months ago, they didn’t look good. But I also don’t think the trailers were worthy of the massive amounts of scorn piled on this movie. I was a big fan of the original movies so between that and all the hype- good and bad- I knew I had to see this one.

And overall honestly, it was enjoyable. McCarthy and Wiig play two friends with history who team up and, with the help of McKinnon and Leslie Jones characters, try to scientifically prove the existence of ghosts. They wind up embroiled in a much bigger deal as someone begins releasing ghosts all over New York.

Ghostbusters is a fairly typical summer movie. It had some laughs (although I would say The Nice Guys and Deadpool are still the far funnier movies of the year). McKinnon and Jones steal the show on the comedy parts but I really liked Kristen Wiig’s character, Erin. Her past and her friendship with Abby (McCarthy) give the film real heart. Chris Hemsworth is funny as well. He seemed to be enjoying himself at least.

We get some good cameos from the originals (and holy crap Tywin Lannister!)

The villain was a little bit over the top and I thought the end kind of descended into your classic summer movie CGI let’s cause some property damage and blow crap up fest. There was one CGI moment that stood out to me as being very obvious. Other people could probably catch more but since those things usually don’t pop out at me this one really did.

Recommend: Yes.

No, it’s not the best, most original or even funniest movie ever made but as summer films go I enjoyed it. Mostly for the characters and some charming cute moments.

Bonus points: for the character who was about to walk into a room full of mannequins, while looking for a ghost, only to be like, “Nope, not going to happen.” I like to think that would be me in that situation.
