Daughter of the Pirate King

Alosa is the badass (she’ll totally tell you that) daughter of the pirate King who allows herself to be captured by an enemy ship in order to pull of a heist for her father. A Lady Jack Sparrow according to the cover blurb save for the fact I definitely don’t think we were supposed to find Jack Sparrow to be the greatest thing going.

Spoilers below for this one. Though I got to say the title of the sequel spoiled it for me so be careful looking that up!

This is a pretty cute summer read. I’m not as in love with the idea of pirates as many people seemed to be so I don’t think I loved the book as much as some. Alosa is also half siren which is actually more interesting to me. And I have to say I gave points to the book for not keeping this a secret and having her be pretty well-trained and actually put to use her gifts.

It does make it a little easier to swallow that she’s so bloody good at everything and gets away with so much on the ship.

I also appreciated the fact that they actually back up Alosa’s place in the pirate world. She not only defends herself. She both kills and orders others killed. Up until the point of a certain boy clouding her emotions, despite her age, I could at least understand how she was a respected Captain in her own right. Even if I sometimes rolled my eyes that this was a teenager, of course, and everyone else was on the young side. (I kept picturing the middle-aged Pirates from Barbosa’s crew in the movies.)

And the myth about her father and mother was quiet interesting. I’m assuming that will be explored more in the next book. The romance also walked the line for me. I wouldn’t call it instant love but it’s pretty much like he’s the hottest pirate on the enemy ship so yeah…

I know it’s not going to happen but I’d be happy if they kept them as friends and co-workers in a pirate way. I’m not sure how I feel about Riden (hot love interest Pirate) he comes off as a little too snowflake perfect but it remains to be seen.

Daughter of the Pirate King is a good pick for an easy summer read. It’s not flawless but there’s a lot of potential for the sequel and it was nice to bring the siren mythos into it.
