This is a quick tag that was originally created by Zarriah Rose on Youtube. It’s meant to be book recommendations in a quick snap. I thought I’d try to do it by season this year and of course start with Winter. My favorite season of all!
The Librarian of Auschwitz
By: Antonio Iturbe
“Life, any life is very short. But if you’ve managed to be happy for at least an instant, it will have been worth living.”
“An instant! How short is that?”
“Very short. It’s enough to be happy for as long as it takes a match to be lit and go out.”
So I read Unearthed recently about two teenagers on another planet in a race to solve the puzzle left by an alien race and either save or doom Earth. It was an okay book but it made me really want to take up xenoarcheology. Basically studying alien races which would be one of those jobs that where super dull until they were super world-ending exciting.
It also made me think of all the other things I wanted to do after reading about them in books…
It Happened One Night
Directed By: Frank Capra
Ellie Andrews decides to run away from her domineering father to meet up with the man she loves in New York. While on the way there she winds up with Clark Gable, a down on his luck reporter, and a series of problems that keep them together longer than they would have expected.
This was my first pick for the Blind Spot Series and a movie I’ve really wanted to watch for a while.
Directed By: Nicolai Fuglsig
I keep wanting to call this movie 12 Down, which I know is not a good thing in military terms. As the pic says this is the declassified true story of the horse soldiers. A unit inserted into Northern Afghanistan and linked up with General Dostum to help them take on the Taliban and kick them out of a couple of strongholds.
By: Naomi Alderman
It would be just as bad as ever.
Naomi Alderman’s book is about the young women of the world waking up and having the power to electrocute people including waking up the power in some of the older women of the world. The Power is also in the form of a manuscript- letters at the beginning and the end- a historical look at this event by a male author.
I spend a lot of time at the bookstore browsing and I noticed last year I was mainly concentrating on and picking up those books that I was familiar with. So one of my goals this year was to purposefully seek out books that I haven’t heard of or just pick up covers that drew me in without any knowledge and attempt to expand my reading.
I definitely didn’t buy all of these. (One so far with three definite ones to come.) But they all went on my TBR pile.
The Cruel Prince
By: Holly Black
This book is the first of a series that came with a lot of hype. As much as I enjoyed the book- it’s a little overhyped in my opinion. For like 75% of it. I admit I really loved the ending. It’s got a crazy amount of potential for this series. It’s up there with Now I Rise in terms of my being excited to see where this goes.
Jumanji Welcome to the Jungle
Directed By: Jake Kasdan
Actually a lot of fun. Which is hard for me to admit because pretty much from the first preview my reaction was along the lines of, “That looks awful. Oh my God. Could they make it look any worse!” “There’s not any ideas left in Hollywood…”
Though that last one is still true. It’s not the greatest movie or original (obviously) but I enjoyed it. It had some solid laughs and it was one that my nephew really enjoyed.
