My Book Kryptonite

supergirl and batgirl

Below is a list of all the sure fire things that will always get me to read a book or at least add it to the old (endless) TBR. Discounting beautiful interesting covers or recommendations of course.

The Search for the perfect ______________

(Insert food. Cookies. Pizza. Pasta. Anything really.)

the summer of jordi perez

I picked up The Summer of Jordi Perez recently became of that delicious looking burger and because (among other things) it’s about the search for a perfect burger. I only eat veggie burgers and I’m not even big on those but it called to me…

Be about Writing, Music, Acting generally anything along that creative bent.

Or be about the love of those things.

Be about Blogging or Vlogging

Bonus points for blogging or blogging about books or fashion, etc.

Be a Retelling and Slap Dark in front of Retelling. Or just plain old dark fairy tales. Or tell the story from the point of view of the bad guy this time!

The movie rights have been purchased….

Read the Exciting New Book Everyone is Talking About!

Me: Okay! I will! I have to know what everyone is talking about!

Producers are talking to (insert hot & likely bearded or scruffy looking actor) for the lead role in the adaptation of this not-yet-released but sure to be best-selling book!

(This also works for optioned and in-development tv shows. I hadn’t heard of Game of Thrones before I heard Sean Bean was playing Ned Stark.)

sean bean as Ned

Me: Ned who? Oh, never mind I’m just going to read it.

Read the Book that’s Being Called the Next Game of Thrones/ Harry Potter!

Me (after): It was good but really nothing like either of those books. I wish they’d stop doing that.

This Book Reminded Me so Much of Game of Thrones!

Me: Okay! I’m sure I’ll see it this time!

The Shocking Twist Everyone is Talking about! You Won’t See it Coming!

Me: Okay! I love to be shocked and I really should read it quick to because I don’t want to be spoiled.

Also Me: But you will see it coming.

Me: No, they say I won’t.

Also Me: But they’re advertising a twist hence you’re going to read it looking for a twist.

I swear I fall for it every time.

Doomed Love

Even better when the love is so doomed they don’t mind outright telling you that up front.

And that’s pretty much all it takes to get me to read or add a book to my TBR. Bonus points if the characters are either AI, witches or mermaids right now!

  1. Oh, Bear and the Nightingale was soooo good! I have the second book already but i was not in the mood to actually start on it. I feel like it’s kind of a winter book.

    1. I’ve been waiting on that one myself. Totally agree it feels like winter and the third book is out in August so I’ll probably wait until Fall maybe? 🙂

  2. Ha ha, all of these are very relatable. I had to laugh about ‘The Shocking Twist Everyone is Talking about’… so, so true! 🙂
I love the Bear and the Nightingale. Retellings, when done right, are one of my favourite reads. And loved Heartless as well btw! 🙂

      1. I read it in February this year for the first time and really enjoyed it. I normally don’t like slow books but this one somehow worked for me. Plus I just loved being taken back to Wonderland. 😊I think she should write a story about Hatter as well.

      2. Hatter would be awesome! To be honest I much preferred Heartless to Renegades. But then again Heartless had a dark retelling, doomed love and food so it would appeal to me. 🙂

      3. I’m struggling atm with Renegades. I’m half way though and just can not read it. It may be mood though as I just want to shout at the characters to just ‘get on with it’… which usually means I should not read at all he he.
Oh the food, I just wanted to eat cupcakes and all those yummy cakes… and that dark side appealed to me too!

  3. These are great! I totally agree with “the next harry potter” which is actually nothing like Harry Potter but I fell for it again! And also “looking for the big twist” so is it really a big twist anymore?

    1. I think at this point all you need is school age kids (they don’t even have to go to school) and some little bit of magic and you’ve got the next Harry Potter! Which I will still totally read!

  4. Yeah food will sometimes get me if it’s on the cover, or even in the title! Hadn’t thought about that before! I saw a cozy mystery once with a pizza on the cover and almost bought it even though I didn’t really want to read the story! Writing or music as a topic will get my attention too a lot of times.

And the much ballyhooed “killer” twist. I feel like I’m becoming a twist junkie with all the thrillers I’ve been reading this year? And they keep churning these twisty books out and I’ll keep buying em lol…
