Thoughts on Solo

alden ehrenreich as Han solo

Solo: A Star Wars Story

Directed By: Ron Howard (mostly… )

Grade: C+

Well, despite my dislike of The Last Jedi and my deep belief that no one but Harrison Ford could play Han Solo I went and saw Solo and it definitely surprised me. I think the biggest surprise is that after all the talk about the Lawrence Kasdan (and his son Jake’s) script that was my biggest issue with the movie.

Solo: A Star Wars Story

Other big surprise?

The acting was fine. I mean it wasn’t anything to write home about but it worked. I actually managed to put Harrison Ford out of my head and just go with it. There were even some moments like when he saw the Falcon go into hyperdrive for the first time where I could believe it was baby Han.

Best parts of the movie and Alden Ehrenreich’s performance was the stuff with Chewie (Joonas Suotamp) and Lando (Donald Glover.)

Actually, I even liked Qi’ra (Emilia Clarke). The chemistry was questionable and I didn’t care for those bloody dice being in there. (Aw, how sweet Luke gave Leia dice that Han and his childhood love used to pass back and forth between each other? Jeez.)

donald glover as lando

Donald Glover was good as Lando but at the same time I didn’t really like what they did with the character and I really didn’t like anything with the L3 droid. I mean humor is subjective of course but it fell so flat in my whole theater it was almost embarrassing. Again Lando’s best stuff was the back and forth with Han.

I just thought the story was way to basic. A heist movie with ever increasing betrayals and so on and so forth. There were no surprises to be had and there were bits in the script that I thought were too glaringly oh, they want you to gasp. They want you to have a reaction here and… it just wasn’t working.

Emilia Clarke as Qi'ra

Didn’t really care about Enfys Nest either. All it really did was make me remember how much they wasted Phasma/Gwendoline Christie both times out.

Despite the fact that we know Han, Chewie and Lando’s getting out of this okay to me these side stories are where you take some chances. Change things up. Not the middle section of a trilogy. For instances there are two characters I would have switched their fates completely.

There’s a tease at the end that I’m actually glad I was spoiled for because if you don’t know the animated series you may be a little confused (I would have been). But even there I had to snicker at how it was presented.

Han and Chewie

Star Wars is in such a strange place for me right now. I think it will always appeal to nostalgia but (for me) it doesn’t seem to know how to balance that, honor the old characters and move on.

I couldn’t help thinking that Alden Ehrenreich would have been great as one of the children of Han and Leia if they had gone that way. I think the youngest was called Ben and actually does interact with Chewie. Acting wise the film had a ton of potential but they played it way to safe in terms of script.

To be honest if there’s story left to tell with Han Solo- for me it’s what happened between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens. Why his relationship with his son was so extreme it ended that badly? Why someone who was always a good guy (even when he was trying not to be) was so hated by his kid? Why someone who was always left seemingly did the leaving?

I’m not saying those things don’t happen in real life all the time. They do. But to me that’s where the story is not origin story/heist movie number three billion.

Recommend: Despite everything- yes. It was okay.ย Wait to view at home though.

  1. C+? Yikes, I was hoping for better. And in regards to the script, I used to have a lot of confidence in Lawrence Kasdan, given his history, but after The Force awakens that took a nosedive. And even though yes Han is a smuggler I was pretty skeptical of the heist movie angle, so it sounds like this might not work for me in that sense. I’ll have to go in with low expectations and just go with it. Nice to hear that Han/ Chewie/ Lando and their interactions mostly work, at least.

I don’t like where they took Han between RotJ and TFA either, and yes I would have rather seen that than an origin story too. I’m so sick of origin stories…

    1. Low expectations help. ๐Ÿ™‚ I will say my brother who has no real history with the series before Force Awakens enjoyed it and my best friend who loves and introduced me to the series enjoyed it as well.

  2. Iโ€™m terrible with going to cinemas (still havenโ€™t seen the new Avengers ๐Ÿ™ˆ) the last movie I watched at a cinema was Star Wars at Christmas last year. I will definitely wait for this one to become rentable. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

I was thinking about how they would tackle Solo – I also have so many questions about his son and think addressing that part may have been a bit more interesting… plus Ford would be in it so it would be a win, right? ๐Ÿ˜‚

I rented out Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and am really looking forward to watching it this weekend. Have you seen it?

    1. Maybe that the problem ๐Ÿ™‚ Hey guys how much do you think we’d have to pay Harrison to do a…? Yeah, your right we could do a young Han for a lot less than his fee! But I absolutely think it would be worth it story wise.

I really liked Three Billboards. It’s a hard movie but it’s definitely a character movie I don’t want to give anything away but its one of those where the characters always felt so real sometimes thats what would make it hard. I hope you enjoy it!

      1. Ha ha, I did not think of it from $$ perspective but it makes complete sense!

Oh that’s good. I love character driven stories that tend to be dark. I’ll let you know what I think after the weekend (I’m super slow with movie watching these days ha ha). And thank you! ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. I want to know what happened between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens too! I definitely want to watch this at some point but maybe not straight away.

  4. I think I’m way to into the behind the scenes stuff in this case and a little too this is what you should have done! This is where the potential better story was! (While I know plenty of people disagree.) ๐Ÿ™‚
Kills time at work while day-dreaming though!

  5. What is the tease at the end? I must have missed it completely?

I saw it last night with my dad and 11 year old brother. My dad liked it a lot and my brother hated it. As were were walking out we were talking to another guy about my dad’s age. He loved it but his two daughters (approx 12 and 13?) fell asleep during it. Must be something with the age gap?

Personally I enjoyed the script and the movie, but hated Ehrenreich. I thought his acting was fine and would have loved him if he wasn’t supposed to be Han Solo. He just doesn’t look right for the part and he doesn’t have the right mannerisms. But if I ignore that I liked the movie!

But I also went in with low expectations which probably helped a lot!

  6. The tease I was talking about was the guy who a lot of people probably thought died in another movie ๐Ÿ™‚ I’ve heard it publicized quiet a bit so I’m not sure it could still be a spoiler but I didn’t want to say just to be on the safe side!

I still think Ehrenreich would have been great as the youngest son of Han and Leia (to me he looks more like them then Driver- whom I love) if they had gone with the children from the books.

I’m not sure about an age gap my brothers only a couple of years younger than me and he liked it fine though The Force Awakens was the first Star Wars he ever saw and my best friend who introduced me to the original series and absolutely despised the Last Jedi really loved this one and I thought it was… okay. Glad you enjoyed it though!

    1. Ooooh that teaser haha right, I got that one! I had forgotten about it because I didn’t really care about him ๐Ÿ˜€ And I completely agree Ehrenreich would have been great as the youngest son of Han and Leia!
