Welcome to my very first Blog Tour post! I’ve been looking forward to reading anything by Morgan Matson for a while now and I have a certain love for weddings (well wedding cake anyway) so getting to participate in the Save the Date tour has been especially exciting.

Charlie Grant’s older sister is getting married this weekend at their family home, and Charlie can’t wait- for the first time in years, all four of her older siblings will be under one roof. Charlie is desperate for one last perfect weekend before the house is sold and everything changes. The house will be filled with jokes and games and laughs again. Making decisions about things like what college to attend and reuniting with her longstanding crush Jesse Foster- all that can wait. She wants to focus on making the weekend perfect.
Over the course of three ridiculously chaotic days, Charlie will learn more than she ever expected about the family she thought she knew by heart. And she will realize sometimes, trying to keep everything like it was in the past means missing out on the future.
My Thoughts:
This was my first Morgan Matson and luckily I highly enjoyed it. It had a screwball comedy movie feel to it. The dialogue felt very real- like the way families talked to each other no matter how big or small and I love wedding settings.
Also I must admit I highly related to Charlie and her tendency and desire to hold onto the past, to not easily deal with change and to hold onto the stories that you’re told even when you begin to realize they aren’t as shiny as you remember them.
It was a nice touch that Charlie’s family is the basis for a famous comic strip- so she’s not even really remembering her past but the story of it shined up and told in the funny pages.
Everything bad that can happen concerning a wedding did here- save the one thing I felt sure was going to happen so good on that. The relationship with the cute wedding planner was nice and some of the things I didn’t like about certain characters (Danny’s relationship with his girlfriend) was dealt with by the end of the book. I actually thought the book took a surprisingly melancholy bittersweet turn by the end.
The book did feel a bit long and I realized I could have done without the whole Jesse Foster thing completely. (Also and this is a personal across the board of a lot of books) either use the swear words or take them out! Don’t make them up and don’t use the spellcheck autocorrect excuse. But that’s just me. 🙂
Save the Date was a fun read with a relatable, likable main character and a nice message about family and facing the future.
Recommend: Yes.

About Morgan Matson
Morgan Matson was born in New York and grew up there and Connecticut. She attended college in Los Angeles, but halfway through a theater degree, she started working in the children’s department of Vroman’s Bookstore and fell in love with YA literature.
After college graduation (with a degree in theater/English) she received her M.F.A. In Writing for Children from The New School and worked as an editor in YA novels. She received a second M.F.A. in Screenwriting from the University of Southern California.
Her first novel, Amy and Roger’s Epic Detour, was inspired by her love of road trips, snacks, and the quest for the perfect playlist. It was named an ALA Top Ten Best Book, a Publisher’s Weekly Flying Start book, and was shortlisted for the Waterstone’s Book Prize.
She’s also the author of Second Chance Summer, Since You’ve Been Gone and The Unexpected Everything.
She currently lives in Los Angeles with her adorable dog, Murphy.

This sounds fun! I like the sound of the screwball comedy feel (totally sounds like a movie) and it’s nice when dialogue sounds real. Also the comic strip element sounds fun. 🙂
The comic element certainly made for some interesting bits within the family.
This was such a great book! Even though I liked how Jesse fit into the story (another test/big decision Charlie had), I think the book could have been just as good without him.
I was just happy it all worked out for Waffles 🙂
