Classicsathon Wrap-Up!

the slippers are ruby red!

So I participated in Classicsathon this month which was run by Lucy the Reader on Youtube and Twitter and amazingly enough I followed and finished a TBR!

I really enjoyed the reading as well!

Me: I’m not really a classics reader. They just don’t do anything for me, you know?

(Actually reads the books.)

Me: These are so good! Why don’t I read more classics?

The Mermaid is Beside the Point

the mermaid and mrs. hancock

The Mermaid and Mrs. Hancock

By: Imogen Hermes Gowar

Grade: A-

It seemed like there were a million books about the sea or some creature in it this summer but I knew I wanted to read this one ages ago. It’s an adult novel about a merchant in 1700’s London whose Captain sells his ship for a mermaid corpse. (He takes it a hell of a lot better than most people would by the way.) And how his life intersects with a courtesan trying to manage a better position for herself.

Mermaids and courtesans seemed like a great combination.

And They Prefer the Diamonds

Gentleman Prefer Blondes

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes

Grade: B+

Considering that choosing films for the Blind Spot Series is very much like a TBR (TBW?) it’s amazing I stuck with it this long. Truth be told I’m very much a mood watcher like a mood reader and I didn’t want to watch any of the movies on my list.

I wound up watching this Marilyn Monroe/Jane Russell classic and completely enjoyed it.

Book Recommendations: Summer Edition!

Book Recommendations Tag

This tag was originally created over on Youtube by Zarriah Rose & I have actually managed to do some seasonal recommendations for Winter and Spring. There’s a couple of good days left of summer (actually more but I’m of the once past Labor Day and back in school it’s officially over.)

Below are some fun recommendations for books I read this summer! But are good any old time of year.

The Light Fantastic: Discworld Take 2!

the light fantastic

The Light Fantastic

By: Terry Pratchett

Grade: B+

Rincewind continues to have one of those days in which nothing quiet goes right. Twoflower and his awesome killer luggage continue to explore Discworld which is seemingly hurtling toward a red cataclysm in the sky and none of our so-called wizards can stop it.

Well, except for the one whose looking to increase his own power.

This is a very sweet little tale about a ghost who finds himself playing in a laundromat one night and winds up trying to assist the 13-year old girl whose working to keep it afloat for her grief-stricken family.

I originally saw this on Perfectly Tolerable’s blog and it was read now on Netgalley so I thought I’d check it out.

Oz Messes with my Head

the wizard of oz

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz

By: L. Frank Baum

I decided to read this one for the Classicsathon being run by Lucy the Reader this month. I kind of have a strange relationship with Oz as the movie scared me as a child. Or at least what I remember about the movie.

I mean girl gets sucked up into tornado, dropped in strange lands, commits homicide by house, meets a talking Scarecrow and Tin Man (I like the lion). Girl is hunted by a witch for shoes that she can’t take off her feet and she just really, really wants to go home. What’s not scary about that?

Turns out the book messed with my head in other ways…

A Monster Hunting Heroine Has Arrived

trail of lighning

Trail of Lightning

By: Rebecca Roanhorse

Grade: B

Maggie Hoskie is a bad ass monster killer who may also be a monster herself. Truth be told I’m not sure if that’s a literal or figurative thing yet. Though I’m going with something your asshole ex-boyfriend tells you being more bullshit than anything she certainly thinks she a monster.

My Newest Obsession: The Crown

the crown season 1

The Crown Season 1

Created By: Peter Morgan

Grade: A

So at this point I can tell how much I like a television show simply by actually finishing it. And finishing it super quickly. To be honest I wasn’t originally interested in watching this Netflix show- based on the reign of Queen Elizabeth. I started watching with my mother and then couldn’t stop.
