Chapter 13: Muse of Nightmares

muse of nightmares

I’m currently reading this and enjoying it. Which is strange because Laini Taylor’s writing sometimes makes me crazy. I wasn’t sure what to call this. Parsing Laini Taylor? The Make Out Chapter? The I probably shouldn’t be annoyed/laughing here?

Anyway spoilers for Strange the Dreamer and up to chapter 13 of Muse. But mostly just confusion. 🙂

The first thing that tripped me up was the line, “their gazes mingling witch light and rue…”

All I could think was rue means like sorrow and regret. Which since this is the beginning of a love scene didn’t seem right. It’s also a plant. Their gazes mingling witch light and… a plant…?

The main thing I could find for witch light that actually was light referenced Shadowhunters and a “pure white light.” Which I don’t know? Shadowhunters? But the Wikipedia explanation references Harry Potter so maybe Taylor was going for that?

Their gazes mingling pure white light that can only be found even in the darkest of times  and regret and sorrow or a plant?

Yeah. I don’t know.

harley is confused
Maybe Poison Ivy can explain the rue thing.

Also why do Godchildren wear “small clothes?” Why do ghosts? That’s a nitpick but the element of that reminded me of good old Talisa (ugh) wandering around the war torn Riverlands in her easy to pull off for sex with the King and nothing underneath it shift. Also the Riverlands must have been bloody cold cause everyone else was wearing a ton of fur!

Show Talisa and Rob is not the image I want for Sarai and Lazlo who are getting a little over the top at this point.

“Hot velvet.”

Referenced twice in this chapter alone and one of those times referring to Sarai’s breasts. It’s certainly not the first time velvet has been used in that way in any one of a number of books. But now I have to wonder why is that good? Is velvet really a big deal for people? I tried to go find some to touch but literally have no velvet in my house. Certainly not hot velvet which maybe its cause I live in a hot place but that sounds really uncomfortable.

I considered going to the mall to find velvet to touch but it’s air conditioned so it wouldn’t be hot velvet.

And naturally their so pure and so full of feeling that the whole ship can feel everything and shudder and such with them. Which generally made me think yuck. How rude. I generally do not want people getting their love vibes all over me and I have to admit the best part of this otherwise annoying chapter was when Minya took control of Sarai and bite him so hard she drew blood. 🙂

Once again she’s been the most amusing and somewhat horrifying highlight. I’m not sure I was supposed to laugh my ass off at that but I couldn’t help thinking, “Yes! Thank you Monster!”

She’s giving me some real Gert (I Hate Fairyland) vibes though! I think they’d really be friends with each other.

    1. Well half-way through I really think Minya might be one of Taylors best characters ever 🙂 She’s certainly my favorite. I both fear her and want to hug her!

  1. Hahaha, it does sound a bit confusing. I enjoy fancy writing but there comes a point where i just can’t even.
I only read one book by this author (daughter of smoke and bone) but i don’t remember anything particularly crazy going on there 😀

    1. Daughter of Smoke and Bone was good but the same things bugged me. Taylor likes her couples to be the be all and end all of love and I just… don’t 🙂 Luckily she has other strengths!

  2. Those are some great questions 🙂
I love Laini Taylor’s writing and her books are wonderful, but I have to admit I started “Dreams of Gods and Monsters” two times and I couldn’t finish. The story was way too bleak and slow, considering the first two books (which I loved, especially the first one). Should I give it a (third) try?
But, even if I didn’t finish book 3 of that trilogy, my Black Friday haul will definitely include the first two in this series…..I really can’t let Laini Taylor go 🙂

p.s. I’m so happy I found your blog, I was looking for a book related blog I can like and identify with for a while
p.s. 2. Do you know NaNoWriMo? Are you doing it this year? I want to

    1. Thank you! That’s so nice 🙂
I have not finished NanoWriMo the last few years but I’m not much of a planner. I’ve had an idea percolating though so I think I’m going to give it another go. I hope you do as well. It’s always helpful and its not like you have to finish or you have to limit yourself to November!
