Death: Discworld Style

Mort

By: Terry Pratchett

Grade: A

Let’s take another journey into the mind of Terry Pratchett and the colorful fun Discworld! This time dealing with the serious topic (except its Discworld so don’t worry!) of Death.

Death takes an apprentice called Boy. Actually his name is Mort…

Mort’s not a particularly good or bad apprentice until Death decides to take a break and live human style and Mort meets a beautiful girl whose death he is scheduled to oversee. Naturally, he saves her.

Naturally, this has long reaching consequences for history, the future, fate and reality itself.

Like if you aren’t supposed to be alive are you actually alive?

We get an appearance from a book one and two character which sadly is not my favorite Luggage.

I like how Death himself deals. There’s no malice, no bargaining and it’s not always fair or just. He’s just Death. Although probably you’d rather Mort because you can screw him around pretty easily.

This was another Discworld winner for me. I love thinking about this stuff- death, fate, the nature of reality. Plus it’s funny! And the love story is really not that big of a thing in here. I quiet enjoyed Death’s daughter Ysabel and her especially pointing out the number of famous lovers who are famous mostly because they died for love and all that bullshit.

Even reading it as a teenager I looked at Romeo and Juliet and thought, “You morons knew each other for like a week tops! Fools.”

If there was one hit on this book it was that I thought the end was a little abrupt and played out oddly. For a minute I thought I had missed something but then what truly classifies as odd in Discworld?

Normalcy would be odd in Discworld. Or should I say on Discworld?

Plus it does sort itself out.

Also does anyone hold the rights to this series? Because it is just asking for adaptation! Come on Netflix… Bring me a Discworld series ๐Ÿ™‚

You can find more information on the Discworld read-along on the excellent blogs ofย The Bookworm Drinkethย &ย Pages Below Vaulted Sky.

Recommend: Yes.ย And I think this is another one you could read easily without reading the earlier books.

  1. Ha ha!!! I loved the “love story” IN the book too! I’m a Smucker for a hate to love trope. So, the whole scene where Mort and Ysabell and telling each other how much is wrong with the other is too funny! ๐Ÿ˜‚ I agree that the ending was super abrupt. I don’t remember it being that tied up and random in such a short time…. But, it had some deep thoughts told in a funny way, so all in all I enjoyed it! ๐Ÿ’–๐Ÿป

      1. Defintitely honest!! ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚ They sound like me and my man… People would think that we hate each other… But, that’s just the way we show our love. ๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ˜‚

  2. Yayyy so glad you liked this!! You’re just reminding me why it’s so good! It’s so funny and I loved the story ๐Ÿ˜€ So glad this was a winner for you!! And YES PLEASE to a netflix series!!
