Holiday Reading Ideas

the grinch and max

Let’s call this a little Holiday/Christmas Reading Ideas List. Mainly because a TBR always feels like pressing my luck. I am in a very holiday mood right now although so far the only Christmas shopping I’ve done has been for me 🙂 Got to get on that!

Reading Ideas Ahead:

Letters from Father Christmas

I think I can do Tolkien in letter form. In fact I’m interested in giving it a go in the book of a series of letters that he wrote to his son as Father Christmas.

the life and adventures of santa claus

The man who took us to Oz does Santa Claus. Expectations that this will be interesting to say the very least.

I don’t really know anything about these children’s books except I love the covers and Matt Haig (The Humans, How to Stop Time) is fast becoming a favorite of mine. Plus these should be quick reads and were super good prices on Kindle.

the enchanted sonata

The Enchanted Sonata is a Nutcracker retelling. I’ve heard good things about this one and I’m more interested in the story after having seen the film even if that was a big disappointing.

the deal of a lifetime

This book sounds kind of sad. But it’s a good chance to read Backman and the audio book is under an hour long according to Scribd.

the twelve doctors of christmas

Nothing better than short story collections when the holidays get crazy. It has a Doctor for everyone (save the most recent) and I feel like it could give me a good idea of the style of the Doctors I missed. And the ones I miss (Tenant, Eccleston.) Plus the Doctor is well known for Christmas specials (save this year) so I have my fingers crossed it will work.

Christmas Days

Another collection of short stories and recipes. I read the authors Orange is Not the Only Fruit earlier this year and really liked her writing. Might put this off until closer to Christmas but I’m interested to see what Jeanette Winterson does here.

the man who invented christmas

The Man Who Invented Christmas has been on my list since last year and I’m very interested to read about A Christmas Carol and everything that went on behind the scenes and during its release. Should be a good one. There’s also a film with Dan Stevens I hope to have time to check out.

So there’s a list of my holiday reading hopes along with all the usual reads. Mainly I want to get to The Girl in the Tower this month so I’m ready for Winter of the Witch in January  plus I have one more book left in the Grisha Trilogy so I’m prepped for King of Scars.

  1. This is an awesome list and many of the books sound magical and interesting! I always wonder what books I can read when people say are you reading any Christmas themed books? So I can actually answer the question! haha So great post!

  2. So many great books to explore. I love Nutcracker and its retelling could definitely be a great festive read.
I had no idea Tolkien wrote those letters for his son, that is so sweet. I will do some digging to see if I can get a copy of this book as well. Thanks! 🙂

  3. I’ve heard of Fredrick Backman’s other books. I haven’t read any of them yet, LoL, but hope to soon. How is that book he wrote?

Currently reading To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han. Read about 120 pages so far and it’s really good!

In case you didn’t hear The Americans got a Golden Globe nomination! I know Keri Russell got one to, I haven’t check out the whole list of nominations yet but there’s probably more.

    1. I did hear! I admit though I was (am) kind of annoyed that both Jodie Comer and Eliza Scanlen got overlooked- also not sure how I feel about Black Panther getting all this best picture love. Like credit where credit is due for its amazing ground breaking credentials or for Michael B. Jordan but it feel apart at the end. Oh well. Glad you’re enjoying the book though! I just heard the films getting its sequel 🙂

      1. Yes, I was super disappointed that Jodie Comer got overlooked again. It’s like what more did she have to do LoL, that was literally a star-in-the-making performance. Very surprised by that snub, it just seemed like a obvious choice.

I am so behind on current movies. Usually the movies I end up watching are always a few years behind on current stuff, LoL. I really want to see Boy Erased and A Star is Born, possibly before the award show. Although, who knows if I’ll see those movies before than.

Yes the book is very good so far! I did hear that about the sequel film, so cool!

      2. I noticed Boy Erased is supposed to be streaming on January 3rd (could change.) That means DVD in mid-January. I might wait for that at this point! So many good things to see and shows to catch up on!

      3. Oh what service is it going to stream on?

I know, I’m always bummed when the mid-season finales come out. Than I am somewhat happy because it allows me time to catch up on all the shows I ultimately fell behind on, LoL.

Oh, I literally just finished The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, a few days ago. It took a minute to get into the the series, but I really ended up liking it.

      4. Yes, definitely a series to get back into! It’s not like a perfect 1st season, but it’s still good. It’s good but uneven a little in its storytelling. Although, the last 3 episodes kind of made up for that with a much stronger arc. Hope you like it =). There’s also a special holiday episode coming up.
