9 to 5: Still Sadly Relevant

9 to 5

Directed By: Colin Higgins

Grade: B+

9 to 5 was my Blind Spot pick for January. Mainly because I wanted to watch something funny and low-key because I’ve had that song in my head off and on since Dumplin’ in December!

The film is about three overworked harassed women (Jane Fonda, Dolly Parton and Lily Tomlin) who attempt to get even with the creep boss whose taking advantage of them played by Dabny Coleman.

The sad thing about this is the films almost forty-years old and still pretty relevant. Right down to some of the office and work changes the women are fighting for along with sadly the much bigger issue of sexual harassment.

One thing that put me off about the film was it’s played for laughs and at this point so far away from the movie I don’t find it that funny. I mean at one point he has poor Dolly Parton on the floor. But this is a comedy and I knew that going in so it’s not like I can hold against the movie that this is still an issue.

On the other hand watching their revenge and their revenge fantasies especially was fun. The three actresses have chemistry, good handles on the characters and fast fun delivery of the lines. It’s dated but there was still some stuff where I laughed out loud. It was nice to because I didn’t really know a lot about this film going in so there were a couple of beats that surprised me.

Overall 9 to 5 was a great pick for the month. I enjoyed it. It’s just a bit hard to look at something that’s still going on and laugh instead of wanting to shake my head and wonder why we’re still here nearly forty-years on.

Recommend: Yes.

  1. This movie is so funny! I particularly love Lily Tomlin, who for reasons unknown has always been one of my favorite actresses. I usually hate older movies, but this one actually managed to make me laugh.

  2. I think a lot of things that were found funny when they were made would not be found funny now, e.g. the fat shaming in the Harry Potter series. Different times, different standards, I guess. Also, I’m guessing Horrible Bosses was based on this film, but the genders were reversed? Jennifer Aniston was awesome in that role as the boss! But looking back, sexual harassment, towards men or women, just isn’t really that funny…
