Intriguing but Flawed: A Novel Bookstore

A Novel Bookstore

By: Laurence Cossé

Grade: B-

Two people decide to team up in Paris and open a bookstore that sells only “good” books. Books chosen by a special and secret committee to wade through all novels. You would think this would be a great thing and for a little while it is. Only soon the bookstore is under siege from jealous rivals, idiots who think their trying to tell them what to read and just generally people who get their nose in a twist at anything.

Which doesn’t seem like a big deal until someone starts attacking the “secret” committee members.

Blind Spot: I Finally Watched The Little Mermaid

The Little Mermaid

My Blind Spot pick for February was an easy one as I have never seen the Little Mermaid and it became available on iTunes right around my birthday it was a little treat to myself.

Luckily it was not a wasted gift!

Angels, Psychos, Sisters & a Beard: Mostly a Trailer Round-Up

tenant and sheen in good omens

So it’s been another stressful week but at least it’s raining (for me!) and I’m going to ramble mostly about movie trailers. But first, at long last, there’s a date for Good Omens!

What Makes an Evil Queen Tale Work?

charlize theron in snow white and the huntsman

I read Forest of a Thousand Lanterns recently because I am always in the mood for an Evil Queen story. So I was a little surprised by how much I disliked Xifeng and not in a hate to love way either. Or even in a well obviously she’s going to be the evil Queen way.

I think it’s a fine line to walk with unlikeable characters Evil Queen or not. But I have some ideas on what works and what, for me, didn’t work for this particular would be Evil Queen.

Only Nikolai Could Live Up to His Hype: King of Scars

King of Scars

King of Scars

By: Leigh Bardugo

Grade: A

King of Scars was in my top three most anticipated books of 2019 and it didn’t let me down! Though that ending…

Just a warning there are spoilers in here for the Shadow and Bone trilogy and for Six of Crows (especially in terms of fatalities in those books.) So if you were planning on reading them and don’t want to be spoiled don’t read this.

I also think you probably should read, at least the Shadow and Bone books, if you want to to get the full feeling of King of Scars.

Powerful Witches and Non-Sparkly Vampires

Theresa Palmer in A Discovery of Witches

A Discovery of Witches

Powerful witches, libraries, ancient books, Matthew Goode, non sparkling vampires… some of my favorite things right there.

I read A Discovery of Witches ages ago and but enjoyed it enough to want to watch the show. The sequel as well though I don’t think I ever finished the series.

Zodiac Sign Recommendations: Aquarius

zodiac sign book recommendations

Well the Aquarius sign holds a special place in my heart. It’s traits include: true bohemian, logic combined with creativeness, a concern for the underdog and human rights. They are also gifted communicators, team players and full of great humor. But full of contradictions (like most people.) So I tried to pick the recommendations that most played into those.

I do like that one of the “issues” is flashes of unexpected rage. Um, yeah. I got that…

The Good & the Bad of Fire & Blood

Fire & Blood

By: George R.R. Martin

Grade: B+

You got to love him. Only Martin could drop a 700 page history of the Targaryens (instead of the book we all want) and then only get to the halfway point of the history! And a vast amount of that is the previously published Dance of Dragons history. Er… I can’t even be angry because it’s Westeros. It’s dragons. I ate it up.

Fire & Blood is also very Martin in both good and bad ways.

I Will Always Ship It!

lady and the tramp

Valentine’s Day is coming and though I’m not the most romantic of people I can occasionally ship with the best of them 🙂 So I thought I’d share the ones that have stayed with me through the years that I’ve never really stopped shipping that have always held a place in my heart.

I’m leaving out any ships along the lines of “Sookie and anyone but Bill,” from True Blood and obviously the ones I’ve let go of (Carol and Daryl from the Walking Dead), together from the beginning (Zoe/Wash from Firefly) or like Harley and Ivy where I could take them either way. Obviously I’d recommend all the assorted books, shows and films* and some spoilers below!

The Thin Line Between Faking it and Felonies: Bad Blood & Fyre

What do a highly advertised first-class musical festival that never happened and a game-changing medical start-up company have in common?

Well, felonies for one big thing.
