The Little Mermaid
My Blind Spot pick for February was an easy one as I have never seen the Little Mermaid and it became available on iTunes right around my birthday it was a little treat to myself.
Luckily it was not a wasted gift!
I was surprised a bit by how much I liked the beginning and the literal under the sea stuff with Ariel and Flounder and friends. I was already well-acquainted with the music though on the downside Under the Sea and Kiss the Girl have been playing in background loops in my head.
I mean it’s me so the romance was a little like…
Ariel: Do you think he loves me?
Me: No. Come on, he probably thinks he imagined you!
(Eric mooning over her and wishing he could hear her voice again.)
Me: Apparently I was wrong.
Eric: If only I could hear her voice again!
Me: Ha. Ha. That’s actually kind of funny.
I did think the film hit a bit of a lull when she gives up her voice and goes to land. Though I knew the ending I didn’t know any of the details so I was pleasantly surprised how things played out with Ariel, Ursula and Eric and completely back in by the end of the movie.
Also me during the film…
Me: I wonder if Ariel knows where Atlantis is cause in a couple of years there’s going to be a guy there that makes Eric look like chump change.
Anyway I give it an A and would totally, definitely obviously recommend it if you haven’t seen it already.
And just to stay on a mermaid theme I rewatched the mermaid film of my childhood this week after not having seen it in oh, probably twenty years.
The Tom Hanks, Daryl Hannah film (also starring an excellent John Candy and Eugene Levy) for the most part it held up and I still love it. In this one Madison, the mermaid, gets to come on land for seven days with no deal with an evil Queen though she unfortunately catches the attention of a scientist (Levy) intent on exposing her which I thought was a nice modern twist.
There are some cringe moments (Candy’s character trying to look up women’s skirts, Alan and Madison having sex before she can speak even though she’s willing & Alan’s general childish behavior when she turns down his proposal.)
Still I think the end makes up for Alan’s deficiencies and the cast is so great and it’s so well shot, probably one of my favorite Ron Howard films period. I was glad I gave it a rewatch.
Splash: A-
Recommend: Absolutely.
It’s alright, I would never judge. I do love your review though. Especially with the connection to Splash. Another oldie but real goodie!
I think I prefer Splash 🙂 but if I had seen Little Mermaid as a kid who knows?

Never seen Aladdin, Pochantas, Lilo and Stitch, Hercules. There may be more but I’m slowly catching up I think!
Meh. Aside from Lilo and Stitch the others were middle of the road for me. I really enjoyed Aladdin when I first saw it, and I am anxious for the live action film coming out, but otherwise not so much. Lilo and Stitch is surprisingly one of my faves.
I think I would like Lilo and Stitch (I love the music) but it also gives me such strong You are gonna cry vibes!
If you are a cryer at sappy things, then it is a safe bet. 😬
Splash! Such a sweet movie. I’m glad you liked The Little Mermaid, it’s always been one of my Disney favorites.
The downside of Disney I will have that soundtrack stuck in my head for weeks!
Or the upside… 😛
It’s been a WHILE since I’ve watched Little Mermaid and I don’t know how much I’ll like it now that I’m an adult, but sounds like it holds up pretty well! Now I’m curious to hear what you’ll think of the sequel. That one goes in a bit of a different direction.
Oh boy sequels worry me. But I might have to give that one and Mulan 2 a go 🙂

Yeah, I watched a trailer after I watched the first one and it didn’t really make me want to watch it that badly but I really did like Mulan so we shall see!

Sweet movie, but nothing wow. Disney-wise, I still have to see Aladdin and Lion King, I haven’t gotten to them yet.

I love The Little Mermaid. I love the old Disney films, such classics! I actually saw this on Broadway twice years ago when it was playing. Titus from Kimmy Schimdt actually played Sebastian. I only saw him in it the first time, he was out of the show the second time. The show was okay, but as far as Disney musicals on stage go Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King were better.
I never have seen the movie Splash. Sounds interesting.
I would think The Little Mermaid would be really hard to do on stage. But Titus would make a good Sebastian!
I watched The Little Mermaid again 3 years ago. It was the first time since 1999. I actually got the story and empathized with the characters. Great movie.
It’s fun to rewatch a favorite film after a long period of time. I forget it enough so it feels new yet still like visiting an old friend 🙂

I haven’t watched the little mermaid … yet. I keep seeing so many people – Keira Knightley – shaming Ariel. I mean I have no idea what really happens, but she sets out to win Eric and to be human? It doesn’t sound like it’s the end of the world to me, and it seems that Ariel is very determined and positive. So, it’s definitely a breath of fresh air to see you rate it A!
I must admit the things I heard I thought I wouldn’t like it either. But the ending was a lot better than anything I had heard about!
