Maybe the Books are in a Slump?

ariel with legs

I’ve been thinking about a March wrap-up and my recent reads worried I was in a book slump. Though I’m still reading a ton and I still want to read everything… but the last couple of weeks there hasn’t been anything that’s really blown-me away.

It could be me.

But I’m starting to believe it’s the books that are in a slump and not the reader.

I’ve read 42 books so far this year and I don’t think I’m being harsh. The books I thought I was going to love have so far been my favorites.

I think what’s frustrating though is a couple of the recent reads (like some of the recent films I’ve seen) have all had elements that were interesting or that I really loved and I did enjoy them while reading them but also…

Potential that isn’t being meet is perhaps what I’m regretting.

four dead queens

Four Dead Queens is about a thief who sees the assassination of well, four Queens. She tries to decide what to do with that information and hopes to help the palace find the killer but there’s an interesting wrench throne into the works that completely changes the game.

Except not really.

Astrid Scholte used to work in films and you can totally tell that. She’s a good writer who I would totally pick up another book from. She gets so close to something here but doesn’t really crack it.

I’m almost finished:

when the sky fell on splendor

When the Sky Fell on Splendor about an alien encounter in a small and depressed town. I’m enjoying this one but I would because it appeals to me and I’ve heard this story before. Literally. It’s Super 8 vibes are strong but I love that corny movie so much! We’ll see how she ends it. So yeah fun but been there encountered that alien.

I mean I read a lot. Same with watching films. So yeah, it’s going to be harder to find the jewels for bloggers and people who love this stuff and maybe that makes it even more frustrating. And maybe I have fallen into a bit of a rut and need to shake things up…

I’m being to melodramatic for Spring, aren’t I?

the raven's tale

I’m only about 14% into The Raven’s Tale arc (it comes out on April 16th) but it’s, so far, a really intriguing story about Edgar Allen Poe and him actually meeting his muse. I loved her previous book Odd & True so I’m keeping my fingers crossed on this one. We’re also only days away from…

Holy Sister

I think this trilogy will end well. I really do.

Killing Eve will be back on April 7th. I binged this show last year so I don’t know if I’m going to be able to stand waiting week to week. I do hope Eve gets her shit together though. I don’t actually want to be rooting for the unrepentant assassin but she makes it so hard!

Stranger Things 3 isn’t until July 4th but I loved the trailer. Loved that Max and Elle are going to be friends and there music choice is always top-notch!

I’ve heard only good things about Shazaam! Plus there’s Endgame and the return of hot bearded Jaime (also known as Game of Thrones coming back) so maybe it’s not a slump so much as a bit of rest for all the excellent, sure to be 5 Star, mind-blowing entertainment to come! Fingers crossed 🙂

  1. Wow a third one and I STILL hasnt seen the first one 😂😂🙈 oops

Maybe its time you read a new genre? Iknow after ive read too much english books back to back i needed to with some french books because boy. Everything just felt so gnreh to me – good but.. no real opinion on anything if you know what i mean? 🤷🏽‍♀️ also just couldnt get into it and understand properly

      1. I see! 😅
Though if you end up not enjoying them as you think you should, shouldn’t it be worth it to try not to get to them right away? 🤔
Guess im lucky to not really am bothered by what’s even releasing eh? 😂🤷🏽‍♀️ I honestly never even know what is releasing when and etc..

  2. I kinda feel the same way!
Came across quite a few books lately that just makes me feel i was mislead and the book was super meh and nothing to do with what i was promised by the blurbs…

Oooh, and new Stranger Things?? Yay!!

  3. Sorry the books are in a slump 🙁 That is the worst! When you are still in the mood for reading but none of the books are meeting your expectations! I hope you find one soon that blows you away <3

  4. Great post!

I haven’t read much in the last month or so. I finished reading Love, Simon in February and started reading In A Dark, Dark Wood by Ruth Ware, but have only read about 30 pages so far. I’ve been too busy working on my latest article so I didn’t end up reading past those pages last month.

I can’t wait for Killing Eve to return on Sunday too! Plus a Discovery of Witches is going to follow that show, and I have been waiting forever to watch that show. I didn’t read any of the books in that series though. Can’t wait for Stranger Things to return as well! It was weird when that show wasn’t back on around Halloween like it had been.

I’m sure you’ll find a great book that will get you out of that reading slump in no time =).

    1. I didn’t know A Discovery of Witches was going to be on! Ha 🙂 I went crazy trying to find that show earlier this year turns out I just needed a little bit of patience. Enjoy!

  5. Totally get what you mean… the potential there, but that’s all. It’s needle in the haystack business finding a book that not only interests you but is executed well. I find that with Stephen King books, but then again, it’s the film adaptations that execute it well for him. Here’s hoping there’ll be better reads for you! And, wow! 42 already! I haven’t made it to 10 yet, but my goal for this year is to take my time and just enjoy reading and it’s working out alright! I do think for us book bloggers there is that added pressure of needing to read and review and that can take away the fun of it sometimes… grr. 😔
