The Rise of Skywalker & My Hope for a Strong Conclusion to the Saga

Daisy Ridley as Rey

I’ve been so busy waiting for Endgame and that It Chapter 2 Trailer I didn’t even realize we were getting Star Wars today. Of course my feelings about Star Wars have been mixed  recently so that could also be the reason.

I’ll be honest I thought the Last Jedi was an absolute disaster. Okay parts were pretty but the rest was just a dull mess of crap story-telling. It didn’t ruin my childhood but also no amount of people going on about subverted expectations has ever changed my mind. And unlike so many other stories in this situation it left me with no interest in the next movie save wondering what on Earth could be done with it…

And this December we come to the end of the saga with The Rise of Skywalker.

Honestly I’m more excited than I was which probably isn’t hard. But still good work on that I suppose!

Love him or hate him think he’s great or not J.J. Abrahams characters and his type of nostalgia has always appealed to me. I think when he’s on it usually is his characters for me. If he can bring back the characters that I loved (even in the Force Awakens I loved the new cast I left the Last Jedi genuinely unable to see myself sitting through another film with those idiots) if he can bring back the spark to them it will go a long way.

Although I will say if they brought Lando back just to kill him and Chewy like the rest of the original cast I’m gonna be furious. Let him take back his ship and ride off to Wookie land or wherever.

The only thing I’m not big on is the title and the surely endless theorizing about who and what it might mean to come…

Oh, who am I kidding? I’m totally going to do that to!

  1. I’m cautiously optimistic that they put Skywalker in the title, since after Last Jedi I got the impression they were downplaying the Skyalkers being “special”. I think JJ and Rian Johnson are just coming at things from different angles and maybe that’s good. I haven’t liked either VII or VIII so I’m pretty ambivalent, but it’s Star wars so if they can pull it off, more power to ’em! And I like Rey but can totally do without Poe or Finn, so hopefully they get sidelined!

And what’s with bringing the Emperor back? That’s either a little ballsy or it could be a train wreck.

    1. I’ve heard some interesting rumors and theories (that I do doubt) about Matt Smith playing a “resurrected” version of the Emperor. There was apparently a Sith who claimed he could beat death or was trying to… But I do wonder if its not just going to be flashbacks or some sort of message?
I like Finn and Poe but if they can’t integrate them better to the main story than I agree with you. 🙂

  2. Hopefully they actually develop the main characters and relationships between them in this one because TLJ did none of that :/

    1. Something else Johnson subverted character building and story arcs 😉 I saw a something about him working with Benioff and Weiss for their Star Wars and almost laughed. They could not make me less interested in those films!

But if all else fails Oscars looking good in the preview so I have that!

  3. Ahhh the title! Haha It has already sparked multiple conversations at work about what it means. Does it mean Rey is going to be a Skywalker? Is Luke coming back? Is it talking about Kylo Ren? (even though he is technically a Solo/Organa but he does have Skywalker blood) Is there another Skywalker? SO MANY QUESTIONS?!?!

    1. I’m fine with them retconning and saying Kylo was lying about her parents but it would seem weird for it to still be Luke. So it must be talking about Kylo/Ben? Maybe a baby for them though I really don’t know how I’d feel about that one! But yeah tons of questions. JJ is so good at marketing!

  4. I think it sums up the problem with new star wars is the fact that we now fear every character that gets brought back is just to kill them. I do get why people are excited now JJ is back… still completely lost faith in Disney’s ability to handle this series. And yeah, no amount of “it subverted expectations” will convince me TLJ was a good movie.

  5. So many questions.
    WHO, is Rey?
Who are/were Rey’s Parents? I think Kylo Ren lied to her about them.
    Who, is Maz Kanata?
Who was Snoke? Why didn’t Luke ever mention him? Snoke said he has “seen the rise of the Republic”. Wouldn’t this make even older than Palpatine? Why didn’t Palpatine ever mention Snoke? Why didn’t Yoda?

But as for the title: The Rise of Skywalker…..
Might this be a movie about that small boy that we saw at the end of The Last Jedi using the force to sweep with a broom? Is he a Skywalker?

Could Rey’s Mother have been………SHMI?? There is a resemblance. Who’s to say that there couldn’t have been yet another “there was no Father” moment—?

    My two big worries are:
    1. that there may be too many useless characters that add nothing. REally, who gives a &!!@mzK8%s what Capt. Phasma has to say about anything? Even Finn. Why is he there? Yeah, he helped them get a ship and escape but we know next to nothing else about him? The oriental lady who said (more or less) in the last jedi: In the end, its not what we’re fighting against, but what we are fighting FOR (or wish to preserve)….a nice-sounding saying, but again—why is she in the movie at all? Far better to have fewer characyers and have everyone be “decisively Relevant!” and—-
    2. I am concerned that we wont get ANSWERS. Specific, believable answers. The leaving people hanging all in the name of “suspense” is simply overdone. The Last Jedi was a TERRIBLE letdown for exactly that reason! Who was Snoke? Who were Rey’s Parents, etc., etc.
I have faith in J J Abrams, but he has a tall order ahead of him. – theOwl30

    1. I had originally heard some interesting rumors concerning the Jedi who had learned the secret of eternal life Plagueis I think and since that was one of the things he dangled at Anakin it could connect the series in a way. The Last Jedi disconnected everything so now JJ has an even taller order in front of him finishing this trilogy off.

I’ve also heard an interesting theory that Rey is some sort of clone or creation of the Emperor himself. We shall see!

Snoke was such a waste 🙁

I do think they’re going to say he lied about her parents. Fingers crossed for specific, believable answers indeed 🙂
