My Top 7 Marvel Characters

Thor getting the Thunder

Endgame is coming!

And possibly a new Taylor Swift album but that’s a story for another post 🙂

So I thought I’d do my picks for Top 7 Marvel Characters. Why 7? Well I couldn’t narrow it down to five. I am basing this a lot on who I feel has had the best overall writing and story arcs throughout the series at least as much on who I just plain love.

Black Panther meets the King

7. T’Challa (Black Panther)

He’s definitely the newest character on my list. I’ve made fun of the fact that I found him the most boring person in his movie (not a bad thing) but I recently rewatched Civil War and remembered how much I enjoyed him there. How much I enjoyed his introduction.

I really appreciated the handling of both his anger, grief and rage as well as the end when he finally confronts the man responsible for his fathers death. And Lord knows I should never knock Marvel for a character that’s quiet, introspective and not offering sarcastic puns every three seconds.

Thor and Loki for the win

6. Thor &  5. Loki

While I do think they went a little too much back and forth on Loki the brother dynamic between the two always stayed strong. And in the end I do think Loki chose his brother and accepted both parts of his parentage.

Also Thor has gone from spoiled Prince to honestly one of the most tragic characters in the series. His scene with Rocket in Infinity War when he took stock of his loses (everything basically) was very moving and the hair cut was a complete benefit.

Rocket Raccoon

4. Rocket

Speaking of Rocket this was not a character I expected to care about other than the fact he was funny and cute. He’s one of those sarcastic biting characters but I think they did a nice job in the second movie talking about his family and his fear of losing them. I like that he’s a creature of action and maintains his hobbies of weapons and body parts collecting even at the worst of times.

Thankfully he has the space pirate angel of Thor when he learns that everyone else has dusted along with Groot.

nebula gets her day

3. Nebula

After the first Guardians movie I must admit my thoughts on Nebula were, “You shaved all your beautiful red hair for that part?” The second movie did a much better job of giving her an actual beating heart and showing underneath the rage and the anger an incredibly scarred abuse victim who also felt betrayed by her sister.

Karen Gillian and Zoe Saldana worked so well together that I totally bought it when Gamora gave up the information on the stone so he’d stop harming her sister. I’m probably most excited for her getting her moment in Endgame.

Captain America

2. Steve Rogers aka Captain America

Ah, Steve. Steve is on my list for writing and arc as much as anything because I don’t really love the character but I can totally see why people do love him and admire him. Even if he does make me occasionally roll my eyes. And I think he’s one of the most interesting and well-written without a doubt.

(Also because he’s generally had the better movies.)

They managed to believably have him hold onto his idealism in a very tough world and against bitter odds. Finding out the truth about SHIELD for one big one.

I also find him incredibly flawed. His love for Bucky tends to blind him to other peoples feelings as much as his stubbornness blinds him to other options. He’s a fascinating character really willing to sacrifice half the universe for one man who knew better and wound up dying twice anyway. I believe he truly thought that was the right thing to do but also, maybe just a little bit, truly believed that they (he) couldn’t lose?

Tony Stark

1. Tony Stark aka Ironman

It might be unfair to say he’s had the best writing and the best arc since he’s been around the longest. But still that’s what I believe and weirdly I was never a big fan of the Ironman movies but I do appreciate how he basically went from I want nothing to do with your little club to… Okay, I’m going to do this with more intensity than I’ve ever done anything in my life!

He is, like Steve, someone who works for good but is incredibly flawed whose enormous guilt and daddy issues get in his way as much as anything else.

I think I just relate more to his cynical pragmatism. Also I think this character really shines in his relationship with Rogers- which is also deeply mixed in his relationship with his late father. And with Peter Parker who he feels responsible for and maybe sees the better part of himself in? (Peter of course shares not a few similarities with Steve Rogers which I’m sure Tony sees as well.)

Anyway essays have been written on both Steve and Tony but in the Marvel universe like that other one I will always be Team Stark 🙂

  1. Agreed, T’challa was better and more interesting in Civil War than in his own film. Tony Stark is also my fave. But I really really really like Banner. I especially like Banner and Tony together. Dream team. I also have a soft spot for Starlord because why not.

      1. Striking Thanos and I guess bringing him back from whatever Mantis does so they couldn’t get the glove. People totally knocked him for that!

      2. Well, it WAS kind of a dick move. We re-watched last night, and my husband and I were both yelling at him about it. But there are SO MANY THINGS that should/could have been done differently to prevent it, it’s impossible to blame it on one thing that one character did. Anyway, Dr. Strange knew he was going to do it, and it’s still the only scenario they win, so…

      3. That’s true! All of this is really Strange’s fault 😉 Boy he should have left a list of instructions to make sure they don’t screw it up when he’s out of the picture!

  2. Ooh what a cool post! Nebula- can’t wait to see her in action in Endgame, And Steve- I’m a big fan of him and his relationship with Bucky. I love the Winter Soldier character and hope he gets to shine in future movies.

I never saw the appeal of Rocket Raccoon initially, but he’s definitely grown on me! Especially when he interacts w/ Thor. 🙂

I would add scott Lang as well, because I feel like the whole Ant-Man thing has added so much to the last few movies. And more Wasp!!!

    1. I love Wasp disappointed she dusted 🙁

Scott kind of annoyed me in Civil War because he was so quick to throw away his freedom and daughter like Hawkeye I could understand from his history with the team but Scott’s presence just felt weird. I am looking forward to him in Endgame and Paul Rudd is always great!

  3. Great list! Personally, I love Captain America, Bucky, Falcon, Thor and Loki. They are top tier. I also really like Fury, Ant Man, Rocket…

    1. I love Falcon but I kind of feel like he needs to move out of Steve’s shadow a bit more. Future stuff with him should be interesting provided he comes back from dusting 😉

  4. I can’t wait for Endgame! I agree with what you said about Rocket. I absolutely love his humour and sarcasm. And I like everyone on this list except Iron man. I kinda hate him!

  5. I love this list! I think Thor would end up taking my #1 spot for all of the reasons he made your list in the first place, plus his original movie was the one that got my into the MCU in the first place 🙂

  6. Thor is my number 1 but Tony is so awesome! I’m so glad this gig brought RDJ to the top, he had such a rough life

  7. I always have to separate the comics universe from the film universe.
Don’t get me started on the train wreck that is the X-Men film universe.

One of my favorite Marvel Comics is Runaways, and having recently binge watched season 1 of Runways the TV show, I enjoyed it. I thought the casting was pretty spot on, but they changed so many elements of the story it was hard for me to see past all the plot holes.

Have you checked out Deadly Class? It is the TV adaptation of the Rick Remender & Wesley Craig comic from 2014. It is produced by Anthony & Joe Russo, who have been behind most of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. To me it is the best cast, and truest comic book adaptation on screen I have seen so far! So hoping it comes back for Season 2!

    1. The Runaways books have been on my TBR forever and I kept putting it off! I really want to read them. Haven’t even heard of Deadly Class but I will definitely check it out 🙂

  8. Right now I am re-watching Legion and am continually blown away by the performances of Aubery Plaza as Lenny aka Shadow King, and Rachel Keller as Sydney Barrett. Marvel characters have always been outcasts who overcome adversity. I prefer seeing these damaged nuanced characters, rather than one dimensional superheroes and villains.

    1. I loved the couple of episodes I caught of that and then just kind of stopped. I’m so bad at keeping up! Maybe this summer I can manage because I remember Aubrey and Rachel being really good!

      1. Ditto, I got into season 2 (I think episode 3 or 4) and didn’t get to finish it. So glad I did. I find it one of the more successful Marvel adaptations since it is more gritty and stylish, with the music and fashion references ( 60s, 70s, 80s) trippy motifs and unconventional approach to the material. Legion being Professor Xaviers son, it was cool they developed the whole story with 98% new characters (outside David and Shadow King)

  9. T’Challa being at the bottom of your list for being ‘introspective and quiet’ felt like you were personally coming for me, hahah. I love and relate to T’Challa a lot! He’s 100% at the top of my list.
I feel like I do not appreciate the female characters in the Marvel Universe enough, probably because they aren’t fleshed out as much as the male ones anyway, so is it really me? The ladies from Black Panther are probably my favorites – mainly Shuri – and I did love Agent Carter too.
Thor grew on me after a while, and I really loved his character in Infinity War. Even though I like his movies, I’ve always found him to be a predictable and sort of boring character, but he surprised me a lot after Ragnarok. The same goes for Steve: I was very surprised to see a more flawed side of him during Civil War.
I do like Hulk a lot too, even though I’m probably being nothing but biased because I love Mark Ruffalo a lot, hahah.
    Great list!

    1. Oh I love him! I just think he’s a lot more together than a lot of the other characters 🙂 I’m sorry they dusted him I would have loved to have seen him in Endgame and taking a stronger role in the Avengers. But he definitely has the best female co-stars in the MCU!

  10. As a boy, Batman, Superman and Spiderman were more my cup of tea. At this point, bemoaning the fact that my mom through out all my old comics is something of a cliche. Ha! p.s. An old comic that I used to love was called Weird War. It combined war stories with horror and fantasy.
