A Most Understanding Monster

Godzilla King of the Monsters

Godzilla King of the Monsters

Directed By: Michael Dougherty

There’s a part in Godzilla where the humans are trying to help him and get him to help us that actually made me break my no talking during films rule. Because I seriously would have been so pissed off if I was him.

Luckily Godzilla is a nicer atomic monster than I would be. Or maybe he just knows Ghidorah will be a better fight. Either way.

King of the Monsters was fun. You pretty much know what you’re going to get- a big summer action movie where monsters fight and cities fall and you don’t really have to think that hard about anything.

I am totally annoyed with what happened to one of the monsters though.

And the human cast?

Names and talent are top-notch and there’s a handful of good moments. But mostly they exist to react to the monsters. Kyle Chandler is very worried. Ken Watanabe actually does get a moment or two and Bradley Whitford is funny.

I do really wish we could have seen more of the dynamic between Millie Bobby Brown and Vera Farmiga as mother and daughter. There are some fascinating threads there that could have been deeper and really added some meaning. Though too do it justice you’d probably have to go back further into the relationship.

Charles Dance and Sally Hawkins were pretty much wasted. There’s the usual lip service to themes like environmentalism and man vs. nature. Science trying to control nature, etc.

But Godzilla is about the monsters and they did look cool.

Okay who let this guy out?

Mothra stood out to me mainly because it was all kinds of ugly and then oh, she’s so pretty! And adorable!

Also it was a little thing but I appreciated they were evacuating the cities so yeah while there was plenty of senseless monster death we’re at least learning some things.

There’s not really much else to say. Godzilla is absolutely what you’d expect. It was fun. Just don’t expect anything more or even different than what’s come before save better effects.

Recommend: Yes. If you like Godzilla and old style summer blockbusters it’s a good way to spend two hours.

  1. Oh my gosh you’ve seen it? I’m so jealous. I’m glad it’s worth seeing because some of the lackluster reviews in the last 24 hours had me a little nervous. I’ll have t go in not expecting too much though, clearly, especially with some of the acting talent- doesn’t sound like they’re used as effectively as they might have been. Bummer.

    Still, can’t wait 🙂

  2. I read about some of the stuff that happens in this movie and I need to see it because it sounds so dumb 🙂 WB marketing is AMAZING – they cut such wonderful trailers for what ends up being not wonderful movies

  3. Good review! It is a pretty good monster movie and exactly what was advertized. But I could have done without the people, really. The monsters were more human.

  4. Ooh, I haven’t watched the original Godzilla, but I think it’s probably time that I get around to watching it with the family. I feel like we definitely need some more good old
family-friendly films that allow us to just relax and not think too hard.
