A Love Letter to Friendship

Good Omens

It’s a love letter to friendship and perhaps a little bit to those who do a half-assed version of their jobs until they realize hey this might be the end of the world.

Crowley (David Tennant) is a demon (who didn’t mean to fall) happy to laze around Earth and send memos while not really doing that much. When he’s put in charge of delivering the newborn anti-Christ to his Earth parents things change.

Mainly Crowley knows he has it good on Earth and doesn’t want to give it up. He and his angel bestie Aziraphale (Michael Sheen) are assigned to keep an eye on the kid and help him start the apocalypse.

Heaven and Hell meanwhile are very much in favor of this forthcoming war. Because you can’t know whose on top until you have a battle.

Crowley and Aziraphale well- they have other plans.

There’s also a witch whose ancestor helpfully predicated all of this. A witch finder General and his very small army. (Like one person.) Jon Hamm as the Angel Gabriel who really only likes Earth fashion. Plenty of demons. Ron Swanson as the American ambassador who should have gotten the anti-Christ and the 4 Horseman of the Apocalypse.

But the real stars are Sheen and Tennant both perfect in the roles. They have great chemistry together the best parts was their history and on-going friendship. Watch Good Omens for them and you won’t be disappointed!

And you could see the build over the years of how they affected each other from the Garden of Eden onward and how angel and demon weren’t so easy. Aziraphale was willing to get his hands dirty and Crowley definitely has a heart but they are mainly they just want to live their lives.

I also really enjoyed how they did Adam (the anti-Christ who grew up relatively normal) and his childhood friends.

I also liked that Good Omens is ultimately a hopeful show. Even when Adam starts messing with the world it’s not done out of malice but a childhood desire to right the wrongs and fix things as he sees them. Naturally I loved the evil terrible Hellhound who came to Earth to wreck hell and pretty much retired  (as did Aziraphele and Crowley come to think of it.)

Good Omens wasn’t perfect. Pretty much anything that wasn’t Crowley and Aziraphele or Adam and Dog was only okay. I honestly wished they had spent more time on them. I could have watched Sheen and Tennant alone for six hours. On the other hand I felt like a lot of the other actors weren’t well-used or very good to be honest.

The special effects were really weak in some places.

Also kudos to David Tennant for wearing the contacts but weirdly when they’d have longer close-ups on him after a while I would have to look away.

The series is based on the book by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett. While I enjoyed the book I thought some bits of it were dated the series doesn’t feel that way to me but on the other hand we lose some of the depth and time spent on the relationship.

So basically Good Omens is come from Tennant and Sheen and the love letter to friendship and dogs and the idea that there’s more that unites us than divides us no matter how different we might be.

Recommend: Yes. If you were a fan of the book or David Tennant and Michael Sheen especially you’ll likely enjoy this series
