Mooncakes? Depends on What You’re Looking For…

Mooncakes

I received a copy of Mooncakes from Netgalley in exchange for my honest opinion. It’s scheduled to be released October 15th per Goodreads.

I was really looking forward to this one: witches and what seemed like cooking. No it doesn’t take much to make me happy but after thinking on it for a couple of days I’m very torn on Mooncakes.

On the one hand I loved the art- very homey old-school feeling to it that’s almost comforting. It did help to create a nice atmosphere as well.

And the diversity was a yeah- especially having a deaf main character along with a non-binary character and two gay grandmothers.

But the story itself was lacking. Basically someone is trying to take advantage of a werewolf and use them to control some forest demon. Nice idea but eh- I never felt drawn into or interested in the story. To be honest this is classified YA but feels and reads even younger.

And probably because of the simplicity of the story I did wind up feeling like Tam and Nova were sometimes too cutesy.

 So Mooncakes?

Yeah art work and diversity!

Needed stronger story with more depth.

Recommend: 50-50 It has very important good points but if its specifically story you want you might want to pass this one up. Though it could make a good gift option for a young reader.

  1. Haha, I was waiting for some recipes to appear here. Oh well, can’t have it all I guess 😂 Too bad about this one, seems like it could have been much better 😢

  2. Looks like the kind of book you devore in one setting, not for the story, but more for passing time/looking at the images purpose. Ithink it could even work great as a distraction for a panic attack 🤔

  3. Though probably not up my alley, I can see myself gifting this to my cousin who’s 12. She’d probably enjoy this! I guess it’s probably something that’s directly suited to the target audience, in this case.
