Thoughts on Lover

Taylor Swift in You Need to Calm Down

One of the best things about a new Taylor Swift album is obviously new lyrics to enjoy. I love her writing style. She’s really the only singer where I absolutely pay as much attention to the book with the printed lyrics included in the album.

Lover came out last week and while even her stuff that I’m iffy on tends to grow on me this is probably my most immediate favorite since Red.

“And you’ll save all your dirtiest jokes for me & at every table I’ll save you a seat…”

Now that right there is my idea of Love. Though listening through the album a little cynical part of me was like maybe Joe Alwyn is afraid to break up with her at this point?

Also my kind of romantic lyrics from Paper Rings-

“I like shiny things but I’d marry you with paper rings…”

I also really love the chorus of Death by a Thousand Cuts

“My heart, my hips, my body, my love..

trying to find a part of me that you didn’t touch

gave up on me like I was a bad drug

now I’m searching for sings in a haunted club

our songs, our films, united we stand

our country

guess it was a lawless land…”

Taylor swift in me!

Overall I think the album and the song placement works really well.

If I was to pick the ones I wasn’t as in love with that would be London Boy, Soon You’ll Get Better, False God and It’s Nice to Have a Friend. I think Soon You’ll Get Better has lovely and moving lyrics and as its about her mom’s illness I think a lot of people will relate-

I know delusion when I see it in the mirror

You like the nicer nurses

You make the best of a bad deal

I just pretend it isn’t real…

It’s just one of those songs like Ronan that’s hard to listen to.

Actually it’s a little weird for me but I do like the more pop and dance happy stuff on this one-

Favorites on Lover include: Cruel Summer, Miss Americana and the Heartbreak Prince, Paper Rings and Death By a Thousand Cuts. The exception to the “happier” tunes that makes my top 6: Cornelia Street and Lover.

So I’d give Lover and A recommendation obviously and I’m 3 for 3 on my most anticipated entertainment this year. Endgame, Stranger Things and Taylor all delivered. It’s just down to the clown.

  1. Death By A Thousand Cuts and Paper Rings are my top two right now. They’re such opposites but I love both of them so much! I also totally agree about Soon You’ll Get Better. It’s a great song and one that I’m sure a lot of people can connect with, but it’s not something I can listen to regularly. I’ve mostly been skipping it when I listen to the album because it’s just so sad.

  2. i completely agree with you that everything by taylor eventually grows on me, but i liked lover a lot from the first listen!
ohhh, that bridge from death by a thousand cuts is so beautiful! i love the line that says “paper cut stains from my paper thin plans”. i was surprised to hear she wrote that just by watching a netflix movie. i think it just is to say that she doesn’t need break up and drama in her life to write a great album!
i actually really loved false god and it’s nice to have a friend, but i do admit i’ve been skipping soon you’ll get better and the singles too. i’ve only listened to me! once since the album was released and i still can’t get into it.
paper rings is my #1 favorite, probably. i just love how fun the song is and it makes me wanna dance every time i listen to it. plus, the lyrics are adorable too!
i really am enjoying this era and i can’t wait to see what other song she chooses as a single. i hope we get to see a music video for cruel summer!

    1. I like the video for Me! more than the song itself. Cats, pretty dresses and Brandon Urie 🙂

She’s such a great writer though. I always tell people if you don’t like her fine but if you can’t even give her any credit for her writing I question your bias! Glad you’re enjoying the album though I can’t wait for the tour!

  3. I agree with many of your thoughts. Lover is my favorite song and video. Me! is amazing! I’ve been listening to the album on repeat through YouTube.

  4. I don’t know why, but I always feel guilty about liking Taylor Swift, but I’ve loved her music since she first began her career. Do you know if there are any songs that are similar to Blank Space? That’s probably more up my alley.
