Find Your Irvine: Palm Springs

Palm Springs

By: Max Barbakow

I have watched 4 movies this month! Is the film slump lifting? Am I jinxing it by even asking? And besides the cake who would want to live a wedding day over and over again especially in Palm Springs?

Okay… wedding cake in my experience has always been damned good.

Nyles (Jake Peralta I mean Andy Samberg) is already stuck in the wedding hell time loop when we join him. He’s decided all is meaningless after numerous deaths and now spends his time getting information on all the guests and hooking up with a vast array of people.

One of those people is maid-of-honor and perpetual screw-up Sarah (Cristin Milioti) who follows him into the time loop one night and is well and truly screwed.

However after she accepts her fate a friendship is built that quickly becomes something more and Nyles must face his fears and Sarah her mistakes (the ones a doozy!) if they even want to be freed.

Palm Springs is a great little film a nice twist to Groundhog Day. It does take a beat to get going as we are just thrown in- Sarah’s POV was the best part for me. Once she’s in the film finds it feet and Samberg and Milioti have really nice chemistry together.

J.K. Simmons shows up as a wedding guest with a past history with Nyles and he makes everything more fun. I will say as a fan of Riverdale’s Camila Mendes she really has nothing to do in the movie but hey the wedding dress is super pretty 🙂

This is definitely an adult romantic comedy. Drug use, sex and fake “suicides” that don’t stick abound and a handful of squeamish moments with Simmons character if that kind of thing bothers you.

As to the actual time loop I did really appreciate how they dealt with it in the end. Except for the goat thing. But the movie was enough fun I was willing to not think about that 🙂

Recommend: Yes.
