The Body Isn’t Scary

I grant you most people wouldn’t think this book- a deep dive (well beginner level) into the body would be but I tend to avoid anything remotely medical in nature. Thank you anxiety. I also have tend to be a little bit of a hypochondriac. It’s a vicious circle.

So I picked this up with a little trepidation.

But I’m happy to say there was no reason to be afraid.

While there were one or two fast references to medical stories of days gone by that made me go, “ew yuck,” and “oh thank you so much I don’t live in the olden days,” there was nothing to horrendous. Although I did think it was interesting we are only a little better in that our medical establishments and Pharma leave us over medicated (for all the wrong things) also broke and there still seems to be an awful lot of guessing going on.

Which is something I encountered last time I got pretty sick and I don’t think it’s too much to ask that for the stress and the money involved that someone, somewhere, can do better than, “Well will just operate and see how it works out.”

The book isn’t hard to read either. I’m not an expert by any means but I imagine having a body will help you get through it.

So I wasn’t too freaked out.

And I learned things mainly that the body is still a divine and mysterious place that can survive some pretty shocking things but in the end one way or another it’s going to crap out and you just have to make the right choices along the way… and I am so bad at making the right choices for anything.

I also learned (and honestly besides the right choices thing this is probably what will most stay with me) the Latin word for goosebumps is horripilation. Get it? Goosebumps… horror… watching horror films… well actually I don’t think I’ve ever gotten goosebumps watching or reading horror.

But it tickled me nonetheless.
