5 Questions for Marvel

Marvel released a sizzle reel kind of trailer for phase 4 (and a celebration of movies) yesterday and while it all looks good I have some questions about recent news and just musings on the future of Marvel. I’ve narrowed it down to 5 major questions.

This post obviously talks about the trailer but also some casting news. All public so no spoilers unless you’re avoiding everything completely.

Where is Blade?

I know. I know. They just hired a writer but Fantastic 4 can’t be much further along and they stuck that up there. It feels like a lot of silence on Blade. I’m a patient person but you dangle Mahershala Ali at Comic-con and then just go radio silence?? I kind of question Blade and the seemingly endless Deadpool rumors whether we’ll ever get either.

And really I can understand the value of a headline but why even announce a film when it’s so far out?

But where do the shows really fit in the bigger picture?

Feige has said even this year that you won’t need to watch the shows to understand the movies which even at the time seemed a bit of a slap to the shows. Granted I think you can get away with it for some characters like Wanda, Sam and Bucky but now we straight up have The Marvels.

Captain Marvel sharing the title with not one but two characters only introduced in the shows? Will they take up space re-introducing them?

Then also we’re getting a Captain America 4 instead of a season 2 of that show so does the storyline they started their carry over regarding Sharon/US Agent/Val, etc or since that was the show do we get a whole new story line? And if that’s the case do all those threads just hang out there?

And will they really do Secret Invasion as only a show?

(That’s already a lot of questions I know but just combine them all under the bigger one!)

Who should be the Queen?

Emilia Clarke is confirmed for Secret Invasion and Olivia Coleman was in talks last I heard so naturally rumor has it Clarke will be the Skrull Queen and I’m just like Clarke would be a perfect Abigail Brand and it would be a ton of fun!

And then Coleman could be the Skrull Queen!

Either way with their casting Secret Invasion got even more interesting to me 🙂

Where have you been?

The Eternals to me seems like it might be Marvel’s most complicated origin story and among other questions the idea that they’ve been here to protect Earth for thousands of years leaves me wondering…

Well what the hell where they doing for the last ten or so years of Marvel land? Fine you let the humans do their thing but I really don’t see why Thanos wouldn’t have been an uh-oh level event for them their going to have to explain that to me. It feels to me like the cameo at the end of Zack Snyder’s Justice League where the one character shows up and is like I’m here to help and I’m just like…

Now? Now?

Well that and Kit Harrington being a romantic lead. The only actor on Game of Thrones he ever had chemistry with that he didn’t marry in real life was Richard Madden actually and Marvel’s definitely not going to do that.

Is it overkill?

Yeah I am not one to believe that the downfall of Marvel is coming at all or that superheroes are on their way out. But I do kind of wonder as the stories begin to massively expand (on television as well) and we seemingly get several different on-going stories at the same time will people get overwhelmed and start to check out.

Maybe instead of a world Marvel will become more of a “follow your fav” character kind of thing for a lot of people. Which isn’t a bad thing it’s generally what happens to me with reading comics. It gets too big, too complicated and I don’t really care about half of what’s going on so I check out.

But than again I always come back 🙂

7 thoughts on “5 Questions for Marvel

  1. All valid questions. Especially the one about how the Disney+ shows fit into everything. I made a ranking of Phase 4 based on my level of excitement:
    1. Spider-Man: No Way Home – My favorite superhero and all the rumors just add to my excitement.
    2. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness – Another favorite and one I hope delivers on its crazy title.
    3. Thor: Love and Thunder – Thor with the Guardians back at peak godhood sounds promising.
    4. Fantastic Four – I’m so desperate to see an authentic version of my favorite superhero team.
    5. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 – James Gunn is back, so I’m happy to see what’s next.
    6. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania – Sounds just as fun as the rest of the franchise.
    7. Black Widow – All this waiting has greatly decreased my excitement, but at least it’s not as long now.
    8. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever – Would’ve been higher if not for the tragedy that makes the sequel a big mystery.
    9. Eternals – Don’t care about the obscure characters and the split second footage didn’t blow me away. Hopefully it’s a pleasant surprise.
    10. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings – Another obscure character I have no opinion of. The trailer didn’t help, but hopefully I’m wrong again.
    11. The Marvels – Captain Marvel is my least favorite MCU film, I never cared about the new Ms. Marvel, but I did think Monica Rambeau was interesting in WandaVision.

    1. Doctor Strange and Loki are top of my list 🙂

I’m excited for Thor Love and Thunder I really loved that Jane Foster storyline but I got to admit some of the leaks and rumors there seems like so much going on in that movie it’s a little worrisome. Hopefully Taika can pull it together. Right now I’m most excited to see who they cast for Fantastic Four- especially Reed and Sue newcomers? Big names? What ages? That will give us a lot to speculate about!

Agreed about the Shang-Chi trailer it felt rather lacking unfortunately and I think (for me) it was the guy playing Shang-Chi doesn’t seem to stand out in anyway. Fingers crossed it was just the trailer!

  2. I’m disappointed too that we didn’t get to see any Blade footage! Here’s hoping Marvel has bigger plans that they might reveal in due time. Nevertheless, this new slate is still exciting. The diversity in both genre and cast is refreshing. Most of all, I’m glad we’ll get to fall in love again with new characters, just like we did back in Phase 1! 🙂

    1. It’s just crazy to me how long ago Blade was announced and now it looks like we’re getting the whole Fantastic Four movie first!

But hopefully you’re right and maybe Marvel is planning something bigger for the character!

  3. I have fewer questions than you do. But that’s mainly because I’m less immersed in the universe, so almost everything revealed in this celebration/ trailer is largely a pleasant surprise. Maybe Blade is coming in 2024 and that’s why it’s not included in the video. I want to believe that Feige has a master plan to make it all make sense, including where the Eternals have been during the Avengers.

    1. Blade’s production was apparently pushed back to summer 2022 so we definitely won’t see it until 2023 at the earliest. It just has such potential to be so interesting I’m crossing my fingers that the early announcement and then all the time before hiring a script writer is more we want to do this well and make it really good and not just hey we bagged another Oscar winner.

Especially since that whole will Marvel ever go R is really ripe for questioning with Blade and Deadpool. 🙂

  4. I am a bit concerned about it all, they’re releasing like 50 projects a year, I just feel like they’re doing a bit too much, I mean it’s fine, but I don’t know if they can pull it all off
