I wonder if the monster hesitated before eating the guy who was standing at the half open garage door yelling, “Where is it? Where did it go?”
I mean maybe it thought oh no, this must be a trap because it can’t be that easy. But nope. No, it really was. And was I the only one who was surprised neither Evelyn or her kid got Cillian Murphy killed? I mean he was bleeding pretty bad but all things considered he’s doing better than I thought for most of the movie.
So I was hoping there would be a good reason for taking the baby in the box out of the farm but not really. Especially considering the use of the oxygen tanks and yes, that went exactly where I knew it was going to go. Baby in danger! Red alert! Red alert!
And the opening scene of the first day… it was cool. But also I felt like there were bits of this movie missing… especially with Murphy’s character and Lee.
And that leads us to the most EVELYN scene of them all!
So after they leave the farm they all stumbled onto poor traumatized Emmett who has lost his wife and kids and he tells Evelyn she needs to take her children and her infant and get walking in the morning.
Me: Smart.
But Regan totally ignores her mother and sneaks away in the night to go find a radio station in hopes she can broadcast the sound that kills the monsters so then there’s this long scene of Evelyn absolutely guilt tripping Emmett into going out after her because Lee would do it and Lee was a good man and Emmett’s not cause he’s willing to just leave her out there and on and on…
And I’m just like there was one scene of Emmett and Lee at a baseball game and they barely spoke and I’m like supposed to understand why he’d give a shit what Lee would have done.
Lee is dead.
But then I guess Emmett is probably thinking anything is better than her with her wounded son and baby in a box like coffin and goes out to find Regan appearing at the perfect time she needs him.
Which is actually good because Millicent Simmonds and Cillian Murphy work really well together. And they get a really tense moment on the way to this island where the station should be meanwhile Evelyn has left wounded son and baby in a box to go get more oxygen canisters and there’s this long, long bit where all three bits are having those “wracking up the tension moments,” and I was just like please, something happen and then it all started happening at once.
The island where people lived happily was a nice break but we all know that was never going to last.
Hence guy yelling wildly in front of half open door and probably confused monster thinking oh this is so easy. There were a lot of leg injuries in this movie to and while I’m going with he’s alive they do kind of leave Emmett’s fate up in the air as that was a lot of blood.
Anyway I do actually like this film. Performances were good and the cast does work well together. There were some nice touches throughout like the kid screaming bloody murder when trapped in the animal trap- also the sound of the trap itself going off and snagging his leg.
It’s like a good sequel but doesn’t have that fun newness that the first one had. Also honestly my feelings for my fictional enemy Evelyn and love for Cillian Murphy’s beard and sad eyes aside I think I would have preferred to stick with him and Regan and flesh his character out a lot more.
It was nice to see the kids step up but onward to the third! Let’s see if they age that poor child up and how much spending his life in a box effects him. I mean he may really feel for the monsters…
Or maybe Emmett just leaves Evelyn and her sons where they are? 🙂
Recommend: Sure. It’s good summer fun even if kind of predictable.
I know it isn’t fresh, but I was really impressed by the sequel managing not to repeat itself. Can’t wait for a third movie and I guess I’ll accept a prequel.
I really hope that baby is older in the third movie because it’s SO STRESSFUL at times! Totally agree this wasn’t as exciting as the first one, but I’m definitely up for part 3!
This was the first movie I saw in a theatre after the lockdown restrictions started to lift a bit. That was memorable enough in it’s own way but there was also this family (at the 10:30 pm show) that brought their newborn and two children (who I’d guess were about four and six-years-old). I am sure those kids had some nightmares after this! But it was also funny because OF COURSE they were chattering the whole time and the adults were, too, and part of me was annoyed but other parts were very, “Listen, for the last year you’d’ve killed to be in a theatre with people – even people talking through much of a movie with ‘Quiet’ in the title” so I felt I should appreciate the blessing of it all.
I’m intrigued by a premise of a Part 3, too! I did enjoy this one but I can also see it as the middle piece of a larger story.
You have far more patience than I would than because I would have been sitting there stewing! Of course I’ve been told I’m kind of a pain to go to the movies with because I don’t like any distractions.
Hopefully the monsters went right over those kids heads. I think the most disturbing one for me was the young kids I saw in IT Chapter 2 but then I used to watch that stuff as a kid to so who am I to judge?
Well I was stewing a bit…and I usually don’t have that patience! I have been known to threaten to take strangers cell phones away from them if I see it again and put on my “teacher voice” to tell people, “Listen, no one paid $10 to listen to you talk. So you can be quiet and respect everyone else in this theatre or we can step outside, call your parents, and let them know you’re not ready to do adult things on your own yet.” The parent remark is made regardless of the age of the person who’s being rude XD. I’ll also tell people, “You are not important enough that you can’t be off your phone for an hour.
And if you ARE, if there’s something going on that you NEED to respond to immediately, than you shouldn’t be here!”
So yeah, I’m just like you. I hate any distractions when I’m watching a movie! I just moved myself to a more mellow response this time as it was the *first* time I was back after a year.
You were much braver than I when I was young. I was a huge baby as a kid XD. I had nightmares from Ghostbusters 2 for YEARS! So if it was li’l me in that theatre, I’d certainly be talking about ‘A Quiet Place Part 2’ in therapy a decade later. And heck yes IT Chapter 2 would be disturbing not just because it’s creepy as heck but because it implies they saw IT Chapter 1, as well :8. Young me would have died of fear. Gah!
The cellphone thing drives me nuts but in my old job by far the most write-ups were always because people couldn’t stay off their phones on the floor! It always amazed me. Especially since in most cases they had access to emails! There’s just a pull to that cellphone that even a great movie can’t beat for some people! Or the threat of being fired!
Isn’t that crazy?? But it is a pull! It’s like this giant magnetic bond we’ve all created in our lives. I remember, what seems like a lifetime ago now, being on a first date with a girl and being annoyed she checked a text while we were out. It felt SO RUDE that she wouldn’t just be present in the moment. Now we’re all so conditioned we’re constantly on our phones – myself included. I’ll find myself scrolling Twitter or checking blog stats while I wait to checkout someplace instead of being mindful of what’s right in front of me. Sometimes I’ll intentionally leave my phone at home to force myself to only watch the world around me. It feels jarring but also freeing, too.
Yeah. I used to say I was fine without my phone but then I started listening to audiobooks and reading through the library app on there and I must admit it all went downhill after that 🙂
