Rosaline, Romeo and Juliet

Kaitlyn Dever as Rosaline

Rosaline is a perfectly nice very enjoyable film. It’s not great. But it’s not bad either. I actually put it in line with Hulu’s The Princess from earlier this year- if you enjoyed that you might like this.

It’s Romeo and Juliet with a touch of The Taming of the Shrew (in my opinion) updated for a modern audience.

I actual really dislike Romeo and Juliet (the play) but telling the story from the POV of his girlfriend Rosaline is a much better idea. Plus Kaitlyn Dever is utterly fantastic. She fully commits to this and hence makes even the more modern women stuff that might not work come through.

Dario and Rosaline

It did not hurt either that I kind of dug Dario- her would be husband in the film. (If her father could ever find a way to marry her off.) Not overly familiar with Sean Teale but he’s good and he and Dever had good chemistry together.

Same for Isabela Merced as Juliet with Dever.

Juliet and Rosaline in Rosaline

I actually liked Juliet in this one!

If you are a Romeo fan he doesn’t come off so great in Rosaline. The end was especially amusing to me but I admit it’s because it makes fun of a lot of things that I always hated about the play. (They never even truly knew each other!)

There are some bits that come off as a little try-to-hard but overall those three make a fun backward Romeo and Juliet retelling. They seem to be having a good time and have some nice chemistry to boot.

Recommend: Yes.

It might not be the greatest retelling ever but it actually makes Romeo and Juliet bearable. Probably helps that it’s not actually about them!
