Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

Directed by: James Gunn

Grade: B

The guardians return to save the galaxy from a new threat. There’s also insulting of powerful people, all kinds of family issues, the threat of Thanos looming over the galaxy and Kurt Russell. I had been looking forward to this one for a while and while I think parts of it fell flat it also packed quiet an emotional punch.

The Circle

Directed by: James Ponsoldt

Grade: B-

Mae Holland (Emma Watson) gets the job of a lifetime working for a cutting edge tech company called The Circle. She’s only there for like a week before her life is immeasurably better. They have concerts and yoga and health care for her parents. It’s the perfect place for someone like Mae but Alice is about to fall down the rabbit hole.

Jackie

Jackie

Directed by: Pablo Larrain

Grade: A

“I believe the characters we read on the page become more real than the men who stand beside us.”

I finally decided to drag myself out of my movie rut and see Jackie. Natalie Portman plays the title role in the days directly following her husbands assassination and how she helped shape and write his legacy- as well as her own.

Life

Life

Directed by: Daniel Espinosa

Grade: B+

Life is about a group of scientists on the International Space Station that discover an alien life form. Unfortunately not E.T. I should say first off that I have certainly heard the Alien comparisons, and understand them, but my Alien experience is only the one that had Michael Fassbender in it. (And you bet I’m gonna see Covenant.)

But that’s a whole other movie.

Logan

Screen Shot 2017-03-10 at 1.47.20 PM

Logan

Directed By: James Mangold

Starring: Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart & Dafne Keen

Grade: A

I saw Logan a week ago and I’ve been thinking about it ever since. Definitely my favorite movie so far this year. The movie takes place in the future where Logan is worn down, sick, tired and desperately trying to make ends meet and care for an elderly and even sicker Professor Xavier when he’s enlisted to help a young girl whose a lot like him.

Hell or High Water

Hell or High Water

Director: David Mackenzie

Grade: A

When this movie came out last year I have to admit I was not the least bit interested in it. I don’t think I even paid attention to the trailers but it got great reviews and is one of the Best Picture nominees this year so I finally, finally watched a trailer and I was like, “Okay, watch this!”

I’m so glad I did!

Hidden Figures

Hidden Figures

Directed By: Theodore Melfi

Grade: A-

I finally got to see Hidden Figures this week! It’s one I had been looking forward to for a long time and thankfully it lived up to the hype. Even though my theater somehow forgot how to start the movie on time and then how to turn down the lights. But that’s a whole other deal.

Assassin’s Creed

screen-shot-2017-01-04-at-2-31-31-pm

Assassin’s Creed

Director: Justin Kurzel

Grade: C

I was really hoping this would be one of those movies that I liked a little bit better than the reviews. It’s the story of Callum Lynch who is forced into a private experiment that sends his mind back in time to connect with an ancestor and find an artifact that can save or destroy the world (depending on who found it of course.) Yeah, there was a lot going on and a whole lot of speeches and I spent most of the movie wracking my brain trying to figure out who played his mother for like three seconds in the beginning because she looked so damned familiar.
