Balancing out the Ferrell

Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga

Directed By: David Dobkin

I actually really enjoyed Eurovision but I must admit there was a moment mid-movie where Dan Stevens character is comforting Rachel McAdams Sigrit after a particularly humiliating moment and I thought… he should have been Lars and Ferrell should have played Lemtov.

And that would have taken care of my biggest problem with the movie.

Films & Shows that Help Tame My Anxiety

Chris Hemsworth

So last night I was supposed to go see MIB: International had the tickets and everything. But right before we were scheduled to leave the house there was some sort of power surge, outage, blip, I don’t know we lost power for a couple of minutes and then it took a long time to come back on and the AC didn’t seem to be working correctly.

And anything like that can set off my anxiety period but then thinking about leaving the animals was just like boom! Not going to happen. Won’t be able to enjoy the movie! Would be absolutely sure something had gone wrong and the house was burning down. And we didn’t want to shut the AC down as it was 107 here yesterday so finally my roommate put me out of my misery.

9 to 5: Still Sadly Relevant

fonda, parton and tomlin in 9 to 5

9 to 5

Directed By: Colin Higgins

Grade: B+

9 to 5 was my Blind Spot pick for January. Mainly because I wanted to watch something funny and low-key because I’ve had that song in my head off and on since Dumplin’ in December!

The film is about three overworked harassed women (Jane Fonda, Dolly Parton and Lily Tomlin) who attempt to get even with the creep boss whose taking advantage of them played by Dabny Coleman.

Derry Girls is an Instant Favorite

Derry Girls

Created and Written by: Lisa McGee

So I went into Derry Girls on Netflix knowing nothing about it save Netflix thought I’d like it based on previous choices and Twitter thought subtitles might be necessary. I wound up flying through all six episodes in no time! Its one of the funniest most entertaining shows I’ve seen in a while.

And you can totally count me in the obnoxious, “Don’t make me wait all year for season two Netflix!” club.

Please Pass the Parachute

Airplane!

Airplane!

Directed By: Jerry Zucker, David Zucker & Jim Abrahams

Grade: D

Airplane! was my Blind Spot pick for July and first of all I want to say that humor is different for everyone. Plus I really did try to think of this movie (like all of them) in the context of its time period (1980)… but at this point I don’t believe I can entirely do that. I also tried to honestly consider if I would have liked this movie better ten years ago.

Probably not.

Girls Trip

Girls Trip Title Card

Girls Trip

Directed by: Malcolm D. Lee

Grade: A-

Four old college friends get together for a crazy weekend in New Orleans. Ryan, Lisa, Sasha and Dina haven’t seen each other for a while but are bound and determined to reconnect and have a good time. I was bound and determined to have a laugh and this one worked out well.

Thor Ragnarok: Spoilery!

Thor Ragnarok

Thor Ragnarok

Directed By: Taika Waititi

Grade: A-

Thor Ragnarok was one of my most anticipated films of the year. It was kind of a strange one for me though. I liked the movie but I didn’t really appreciate how good it was until that ending. I’ve seen a couple of people say this movie did for Thor what Winter Soldier did for Captain America and that’s really true.

Spoilers below. Though I try to keep it vague…
