On the one hand I can completely understand why people wouldn’t like this book and don’t like Morgenstern’s writing. There’s a scene in which a character frees the dolls inside a nesting doll: a doll within a doll, a story within a story, within a story, a myth chased through time and space…
Yeah, I get why people won’t like it.
I ate it up.
Fierce Fairytales

Grade: A
I read Wild Embers by Nikita Gill earlier this year and immediately ordered Fierce Fairytales. The book is made up of poems, stories and illustrations “to stir your soul,” as the cover says! I seriously connected with the work so I guess you could say my soul was indeed stirred.
The Anomaly

This book is full of things I would never do. Explore a cavern high in the walls on the Grand Canyon… nope. Especially a cavern that I believe the government concealed discovery of the first time around… nope. And maybe if I did one day strangely get that far the rest of it would go like this:
Oh, it’s just a cavern! Kind of a disappointment.
Wait, look is that stairs over there?
We should follow them and see where they go!
Me: Nope. I’m out. Sunshine please!

Ghosts, star-crossed lovers, tragedy, more ghosts, shape-shifters, dances and sisters among other things… A Thousand Beginnings and Endings is an anthology of Asian myths and legends that released at the end of June.
It’s a beautifully written and entertaining collection of stories and if you aren’t familiar with the myths or want to know more about them there’s a page or two of information by the author at the end of each story which I was so grateful to read!

One of my goals this year was to just hit the bookstore and find books I had never heard of that jump out at me. I found some good books in January although the results of the actual reads have been pretty mixed. Of the latest batch to go on my TBR that I’ve actually read is this one about a Minotaur girl, a hamburger God, an Orc biker gang and a old-fashioned modern day quest.
