Six of Crows
Author: Leigh Bardugo
Genre: YA/Fantasy
Grade: A!
This book was on my list for the longest time and I was like, “I’ll get to it eventually. Probably.” And then for some reason I had to have the hard back edition with the black-lined edges on the paper. So pretty.
Kaz is the leader of a group of youths who undertake an impossible heist mission that will make their fortunes and get them out of some very dicey situations. This is a multiple point of view novel not just Kaz but also his right-hand girl Inej, Nina and Matthias who have an interesting and very frought story and Jesper, the troubled funny gambler of the group.
The stakes are high. The mission is intense enough to hold interest throughout. But it was the characters that I really loved. I liked every single one of them and wanted them all to succeed and live and get what they wanted and they all really want different things. This was also more my cup of tea in the romance department. Harsh reality and nothing shoved down your throat but people who actually seem to (at least try) to be accepting of the imperfections of the other and like each other for who they are. And they aren’t perfect.
This book is set in the same world as Bardugo’s Grisha Trilogy which I’ve never so much as cracked the spine of and I don’t think you really have to. I understood everything. Excellent world-building- you can follow along more than easily enough. Though I did get the impression from the ending some elements could become more involved in future books.
I must admit my enjoyment of this book makes me want to check out the Grisha Trilogy. Also on the plus side not reading it right away means I only have to wait a couple of months for the next one!
Recommend: Yes. Great characters, world-builing and a fun heist that reminded me a little of the great Hollywood heist films. Butch and Sundance, Sneakers and Ocean’s Eleven being among my favorites.
