So after suspending my subscription Owlcrate pulled be back in this month. Owlcrate is one of the more popular monthly book subscription boxes for YA (and they have an Owlcrate Junior now) May’s theme was comic explosion.

I was 99% sure of what the book was based on the synopsis. It was one of my most wanted books of the year and since it’s not even out until May 30th I ordered the box.

I was right!

Eliza and Her Monsters by Francesca Zappia is about a high-school girl whose just barely doing the minimum to get by in the real world while she lives a double-life as the creator of the enormously popular webcomic Monstrous Sea.

The book is not as mixed media as something like Illuminae but we do get pages of Eliza’s drawings and text messages between her and her on-line friends.

The Owlcrate version is also an exclusive cover.

Other things in the box included:

The zipper pull and the usual monthly theme pin (see first picture).  I saw a couple of unboxing this weekend in which people were saying the zipper pull was a keychain but the card says zipper pull. I suppose it could also be a keychain.

Kafe Coffee Candies- I am one of those seemingly strange people (at least that’s what my friends tell me) who cannot stand the taste or the smell of coffee. Sometimes just standing in Starbucks makes me feel sick so these were passed along.

The six different ink colors pen is from Ooly. I had these pens when I was a kid so I was excited to get it! That being said mine doesn’t write particularly well.

Batman Pop Funko This was a big win while I don’t particularly care about Batman one way or another I have several of the other seven choices (yes, I have too many Pop Funko’s!) I was willing to take the chance of a repeat but glad I got this one!

Wonder Woman Candle from Dio Candle Company. Oh my God! It’s inspired by her tropical island and it smells like fruit punch. It’s probably my second favorite item in the box.

The only thing I’ve noticed with all these book box candles they don’t really smell when burned, at least not to me. I don’t think they’re big enough.

This is actually a piece drawn by the author of the book and I quiet like it. It’s one of the few prints from boxes that I’ve actually put up already. I love the fact that it’s from the author. “You Found Me In A Constellation,” made me want to read the book even more.

Lastly we received a sampler from Image Comics:

Afar is about a girl who can astral project (cool) and when doing so gets someone hurt on another planet. Once she returns home she needs to figure out a way to get back and save that person. I like the sound of this story especially that little element of actual consequences for the super- powered and the art work looks really beautiful…

I’m definitely going to check this one out.

So I loved the theme, the candle and the sampler, got lucky with the Funko and very much wanted the book. I’m still deciding if I’m going to cancel again or let my subscription roll over. Next months theme is:

For the first time in a while I don’t have any idea what the book might be!
